Jeff Greene's mother leaves him and his father when he is only seven. Jeff tries to make everything perfect for his father so he won't also leave.

After many years apart from his mother, she asks him to visit her in Charleston, South Carolina. He connects and has a wonderful time, the first since Melody left. After his visit, he writes her letters on the first day of every month even though she never writes back.

On his second summer visit, Melody has a boyfriend and is never at home for more than a day. He realizes that Melody doesn't really care about him.

Jeff begins to fail his classes, and becomes so withdrawn his father becomes convinced he is on drugs. The family moves. Jeff makes some friends and gets his life back on track, taking an interest in school and the guitar. He learns to accept himself, and his relationship with his father improves.

After a year in Crisfield, Jeff meets the Tillermans and begins courting Dicey.

Finally, Jeff is able to put his mother behind him and bond with his father.
