  • Noel Foster: Probably meant to be the lead character in the story. In herits 3 314 pounds from an aunt, quits his job as stock broker and goes in pursuit of an heiress to Chalford. Becomes the "lover" of Mrs. Lace.
  • Jasper Aspect: Scoundrel that never lifts a finger to do an honest day of work. Lives off his friends, has his family bail him out of debt numerous times, falls for married Poppy St. Julien. Robs his friend Noel Foster of as much money as possible.
  • Eugenia Malmains: 17-year-old heiress whose father died of wounds after WWI. Her mother had by then divorced him. Because of the scandal, her grandparents, who have raised her, have hidden on their estate all years and have failed to notice that society has changed. Eugenia is a fanatic follower of National Socialism.
  • Poppy: While in incognito she calls herself Miss Smith but she is the married wife of Anthony St Julien. She's used to her husband courting debutantes every year but can't afford to divorce him when she falls half-heartedly in love with Jasper Aspect.
  • Mr Wilkins: Local squire that is vulgar and tells jokes of sometimes bad taste. At least not liked by the local artists and intellectuals. Becomes the fancy of Lady Marjorie.
  • Anne-Marie Lace: Wife to Major Lace whose only interests are pigs and cows. She on the other hand is an intellectual with poor background. Regarded as the local beuaty, she surrounds herself with artists and dresses in very eccentric manner, pretending to be French but only being the daughter of a vicar and her real name being Bella.
  • Lady Marjorie: Ran away before her wedding to a duke, together with her best friend Poppy. Spoiled beyond reason, waiting for love to strike, she heads for Chalford where she spends all day, every day in bed till she meets Mr. Wilkins and falls madly in love with her. Her feelings not answered though.
  • Lady Chalford: Eugunia Malmains' grandmother that lives in the past. Trying to protect her grand-daughter from all things evil like immoral people. Doesn't understand that National Socialism isn't the Women's Institute.
  • Mr Leader: Artistic frriend of Mrs. Lace. Leads a colony of artists and is a pacifist. Hated by Eugenia hates him.
  • Anthony St Julien: Husband of Poppy, who can't stop dreaming of finding a new, YOUNG, wife for himself among the London debutantes not realizing that no debutante's mother will accept a divorced man for her daughter, him being the guilty party.
  • Vivian Jackson: Eugenia Malmains' horse.
  • Mr Birk: Owner of the Inn where Jasper, Noel, Poppy and Marjorie are staying.
  • Nelson: Admiral and great hero at the Battle of Trafalgar 1805.
  • Major Lace: Husband of Anne-Marie Lace or Bella. Only interests himself in cows and pigs and fails to see how unhappy his wife is in the marriage. She lives to meet strangers and dreams of leaving him and escaping to London with her good looks.
