Seriously, a work of fiction doesn't get any better than this. Michener is a master, and I really, really miss his style of story telling. When you have authors like Dan Brown leading the New York Times best seller list, you realize how far we've fallen.

cool stories- naval battles, european politics in the 1600-1700s, and great history of the islands.

This novel by James Michener (one of our great authors) was a bit of a let down for me. It was an interesting and a informative historical story, but the story just seemed to drag on.

I haven't read anything by Michener, except Mexico, in years. I did enjoy this book and learned a lot about the development of the various countries in the Carribean and the history of the population there. Carribean is as good a read as Hawaii, Centennial, Texas, and other books Michener wrote.

One of my favorite Michener novels. Full of colorful characters and exotic life cultures.

This was my first and last Michener book. It took me 3 months to get thru this book. The only thing I remembered as soon as I closed the book and what I remember to this day is the fact that pirates have gold earrings to pay for their funeral.
I am not a Michener fan. It is me. I would recommend this book to anyone willing to give it a go.

I really enjoy Michener's books which take you from the very beginning of geologic time and take the reader through all the many developments, from the arrival of the first animals to the changing cultures of a place. It's fascinating!
