Sam Eastland's debut novel, The Eye of the Red Tsar, can best be described as a hybrid between the television show 24 and a historical fiction account of the Russian Revolution. The novel takes place in 1920s Communist Russia- now the Soviet Union. The revolution has ended, the Tsar and his family are presumed dead, and Stalin's government is still young and developing. Inspector Pekkala, Tsar Nicholas II's former chief investigator and family friend, has been sentenced to a life long term of labor in a distant Siberian labor camp.

To his surprise, he is met one day in the woods by a young Red Army officer. The man has special orders from Moscow to take Pekkala out of the camp at once, and brief him on a highly classified assignment. If Pekkala agrees to help with the new assignment, he will be freed of his sentence, and allowed to leave the country if he wishes. Pekkala leaves the camp with the officer, and travels with him to the nearest police station. There they are met by a respected and high ranking party official who has been assigned to work with both Pekkala and the Red Army officer; he is Pekkala's estranged brother.

The reunion is a rough. But Pekkala comes to terms with his brother. He is informed of his assignment. Stalin's government is not certain all of the Romanovs were executed on that fateful night the firing squad came to the house they were being held captive in. It is believed that at least one of the Romanov children, possibly young Alexi, the heir to the Russian throne, might have survived. Pekkala is to investigate whether this is the case, and if so, hunt down and find any of the surviving Romanovs; people he once and still considers dear friends. The threat a living heir to the Russian throne poses to the new Communist Regime is unthinkable. Pekkala will either comply, or be executed himself. Pekkala agrees to the assignment and the search begins. Did any of the Romanovs survive? That's for you to find out.

This novel is filled with plenty of page-turning action, interesting historical fiction content, and an excellent and riveting plot. If you love history, love action and adventure, and love mystery, this book is a book for you!
