The General's Daughter

The General's Daughter

by Nelson Demille

Long before the John Travolta film of The General's Daughter (which the author extols in the foreword), Nelson DeMille's seventh mystery was the breakout hit of his career. The rapid-fire dialogue and scenes are cinematic, and the storytelling puts most movies to shame.
The book has three heroes: Paul Brenner and Cynthia Sunhill of the army's Criminal Investigation Division and Capt. Ann... (read more)

This isn't the kind of book I'd usually pick up, but I found myself bookless on vacation (*gasp*)and it was available. I loved it. The narrator was such a smart ass that it turned a pretty gruesome story into a fun read. It's all about the voice.

Another solid book from one of my favorite mystery writers, Nelson DeMille. This one, however, wasn't quite up to the greatness of "The Charm School" or "The Gold Coast," as it didn't quite hold my interest throughout, and I had a feeling who the killer was right from the start (and I was right!).

An interesting note: It is pretty obvious that the main character--Paul Brenner--laid the groundwork for a future repeating Nelson DeMille character in Jon Corey. The two characters are incredibly similar, from their sarcastic, cynical demeanor to their trouble understanding women to their use of certain phrases (such as "my goodness"). It was strange reading this book after reading all the Jon Corey novels, as I really did feel like I was reading yet another one with Mr. Corey in it.

Decent mystery, much better than the movie (aren't they always!). I have enjoyed two other of Demille's Books and have found him to be a solid read.

Captain Ann Campbell is a West Point graduate, the daughter of legendary General "Fighting Joe" Campbell. She is the pride of Fort Hadley until, one morning, her body is found, naked and bound, on the firing range. Paul Brenner is a member of the army's elite undercover investigative unit and the man in charge of this politically explosive case. Teamed with rape specialist Cynthia Sunhill, with whom he once had a tempestuous, doomed affair, Brenner is about to learn just how many people were sexually, emotionally, and dangerously involved with the army's "golden girl". And how the neatly pressed uniforms and honor codes of the military hide a corruption as rank as Ann Campbell's shocking secret life. This was an exciting read!

I'm a Nelson DeMille fan, so all I can say is if you like the "spy thriller" or military theme books, he's your man.

My least favorite Demille book thus far. Predictable thriller with likable characters and a military based plot.
