Torey, the narrator, moves to a new town and begins his senior year at a new high school. As he starts thinking about how his year will be, he remembers how strange his junior year was, in particular, his former classmate Christopher Creed, who disappeared without a trace, except an email<2> to the principal saying that everyone would rather have him gone.
Torey, in possession of the note from Chris Creed, is about to show it to his classmates Leandra and Renee. Later, Leandra calls and complains about Ali McDermott. Torey is scared that Leandra will call again and starts to think up excuses to tell Leandra for not answering his phone. Torey thinks back to his childhood when he was riding his bike past Ryan's house and went by the Indian burial ground. Alex saw Chris leaving the burial ground and he shows him the treasure map that he had made. He says that he buried his treasure there just moments before.
Victor faces the challenge of discovering the truth about a boon named Bo Richardson and his friend, Ali McDermott. He avoids telling the truth about a call made to Sylvia Creed, which went from lying to extortion, deals with the rumors of him and Ali sleeping together, and confronts the fear that his mother will find out he made the call. Victor also struggles with not knowing how to deal with the information found in Chris Creed's diary, which was sent to Ali from Bo, through Mrs. Adams, without her knowing what the notebook was.
One morning, as Torey and Ali board the bus, they are bombarded with questions from Alex, Renee, and Ryan all wondering why Ali was with Torey, and if the stories about them getting arrested with Bo are true. They try to avoid the questions and start a conversation with an unpopular kid. Mr. Adams picks Torey up from school and starts to tell Torey that he needs to watch out for Bo, and Torey starts to defend Bo. Mr. Adams says that Bo doesn't need to worry about murder cases. Ali walks all the way to Torey's house to get away from the school bus. When she gets there she tells Torey that Bo has been arrested. Leandra calls Torey and when Ali picks up the phone she accuses Torey of sleeping with Ali. Torey and Ali head to see Bo. Torey says to Ali that he will confess to the phone call if she says that she did it.
Torey returns to school and thinks he is going to hear about the previous events. Ali reacts to the return of Bo by acting like nothing ever happened. Torey hears that the police is coming to get Bo when Ali passes him a note during second period; she heard it from some of the teachers when they are talking. She does not know why the cops are coming for Bo. Bo assumes that if he gets arrested again, that Torey's mom will get him out of trouble. Soon Bo is wanted for questioning.
Ali and Torey decide they want to go to the woods to see if they can find Chris Creed's body. They find a map made years before, and immediately recognize the handwriting on it as Chris's. When Torey gets home, he sleeps for a while, then receives a call from his best friend Alex Arrington, asking him to meet up at seven o'clock. When they meet behind Torey's house, Alex indirectly accuses Torey of being an accessory to Chris Creed's alleged murder. When they finish arguing with each other and with Renee over the phone, Torey heads into the dark woods.
When Torey opens his eyes, he sees an Indian Spirit that he remembers from his childhood. Torey follows it, and ends up in an old Indian burial ground. At the burial ground, Torey breaks his leg when a big rock falls on it. Torey crawls into the Indian graves, seeing how neat and carefully wrapped they are, when he spots a human body that isn't wrapped up like the others. When he gets closer, he immediately thinks it is Christopher. Out of nowhere, air rushes through the space where Torey had crawled in and the corpse starts peeling apart. Torey is traumatized. Since he can't stand the Steepleton gossip, he moves away for his senior year but is still emotionally disturbed.
