- Etre: The narrator of this book. Is frustrated at the insignificance and stupidity of cow life. He is incredibly intelligent and is bothered that he can't communicate with the other cows and humans.
- My Cow: The cow that Etre has a calf with and loves.
- Bull Calf: Etre and My Cow's calf. He follows Etre despite not understanding him.
- Black Bull: Large, violent, mean bull, who often charges Etre and tries to steal My Cow from Etre.
- Jacques: The farmer's son. Taunts the cows, but Etre loves him and loves when he sings.
