Very suspenseful! Interesting how it kept going back and forth between the time periods, I fell in love with both! I love Historical Fiction, but I also found myself loving the present time in this book. Very good development of characters.

~ Spoiler alert: Be warned, there are some spoilers in this review! ~

This book isn't great literature, but it is an easy and entertaining read. The mystery plot is standard and predictable, as is the romance. I kept thinking that there would be a surprise ending where it turns out that the apparent good guy is really the bad guy - which in itself is pretty standard. But even that didn't happen, the bad guy is the one that you (and the heroine) suspected all along.

The time travel twist adds a nice extra dimension, and due to that I rate the book 3.5 stars rather than just 3 (average).

Another interesting aspect was that, not only does one of the main characters die, but her death is narrated in first person. You don't see that very often. It is original, intriguing, and eerie.

I didn't like the way overweight people were treated in this book. There was a bias evident which would raise an outcry of "racism" if it related to skin color rather than body size. Any character who was described as being even so much as "chubby" or "plump" was invariably unlikeable, unattractive, dumb, and a slob. This includes one character who, normally beautifully and impeccably groomed, turns into a greedy, messy pig when she eats, getting grease stains and chocolate smears all over her lovely clothes. Sorry, but that's not the way it works - it is out of character. Also, this character is described as being 100 lbs overweight, and clearly the author has no clue how easy it can be to gain that much weight. If a person ate the way this character eats, she would be 700 lbs. overweight, not 100. If this author (whom I have no doubt is slim, without having to look at her photo!) is going to write about fat people, she needs to do some research, and better yet, make some friends who are overweight, to gain some compassion and understanding.

Another gripe I had was that some ends are left hanging. I wish there had been some explanation as to why a beautiful young woman would become involved in a romance with a man who was almost 70. (Clearly it wasn't the money.) If that plot line was included, it should have been explored. As it stands, simply stated as a bald fact, it doesn't play.

And we never learn the fate of Adam, one of the main characters, which is frustrating. *Sniff, sniff* Do I smell a sequel coming?

Also, the character of Tori, the missing sister, needed much more development. As presented, she is unreliable, irresponsible, and slutty. Sister or no, one cannot understand why Tess would care so much and go to such great lengths for such a person. I would like to have seen more good in Tess' personality.

The book does keep you turning the pages, though. It is competently written and fine for light escapist reading.

"Survivors must at times rejoice in life to prevent themselves from lying down with the deceased."

    4/5 An exciting paranormal romance!

This is my first Erin Grady novel, and it certainly won't be my last. I enjoyed the sizzling romance mixed with paranormal time-travel. Reminded me somewhat of my own novel, The River, although it is very different. I found the characters were 3-dimensional and satisfying. There were enough twists and turns to keep me on my toes, and all in all Echoes was a great read with an interesting spin.
