“People are always drawn to a tragedy, and I read this book after seeing the IMAX film on Mount Everest. I am continually amazed that humans will spend many thousands of dollars and risk life and limb simply to climb the tallest mountain in the world. Which, it seems from most accounts, is not all it is cracked up to be--what with the inability to breathe, the mortal danger, etc., and then you MIGHT get to the top for a couple of minutes and then have to head back down cos you are on a tight schedule. You might spend all this time and effort and never make it up there because it is too stormy at the top. Nevermind members of your party dying on the way. Regardless, Krakauer makes this a fairly riveting account of his trek up the mountain, accompanied by the tragedies that follow. ”

I found the book fantastically gripping. It gives an insider's perspective into the area of climbing and adventure sports in general. I enjoy the mountains myself, and this book makes me wonder why I would want to risk my life when there are so many sane reasons not to!”

That said I cannot even begin to convey how much I loved, loved, loved this book! I was sucked in from the very beginning. Despite all his critics, Krakauer has an amazing gift for writing. All his other volumes are soon to follow for me.”
