    Memizuki,

I completely agree. Anyone climbing Everest (guided or not) should be prepared to take personal responsibility for the amount of risk they are exposing themselves to. Being on a guided climb is no guarantee of safety, nor should it mean you relinquish your responsibility to somebody else - anybody who thinks like that should not be climbing the mountain.

I feel sorry for Krakauer that the criticism he received has blighted his conscience and left a permanent mental scar. There was a catalogue of errors that led to disaster - for example, the Chinese team climbing when they said they wouldn't and causing a jam of people at the Hilary step, and experienced guiding climbers not sticking to their own rules (Let's remember, three of those that perished were guides). Krakauer was not responsible for anyone else up there and whilst it seems unquestionable that one should go and help another in distress, there was absolutely nothing he could have done to save those that died. Had he tried, all that would have resulted would have been another death on the mountain that fateful day.

Didn't it make you so mad that people actually had the nerve to Criticize from the comfort of their own home. He can say he climbed mount everest who can say that? what accomplishments do these people have in their own lives.

It made me mad, that one of the sisters of the people that died on the mountain had the audacity to get mad at him. I believe that if you take the chance to go and climb mount everest there is something in the back of your mind that says "i might not get out of this Alive" its a chance that these people are willing to take.

I do have to wonder if these people have changed their minds since time passed!

I don't think the criticism Krakauer received was at all justified. It's very easy for other people to say what he should have done, but they weren't there on the mountain that day.

Not only was he exhausted and suffering from the effects of altitude, even the fit climbers at camp four could not venture out of sight of the camp because of the ferocity of the storm and the risk of being lost themselves. Given these circumstances there was nothing he could have done (even if capable) without putting his own life in jeopardy.

I haven't finished the book yet, but yes, I do think that trips to Everest should be more restricted. And if I was to climb Mt. Everest I would use supplemental oxygen, but I would feel more like I really climbed the mountain if I didn't use supplemental oxygen.

Everst is too commercialized. When the path is littered with so much garbage that the view of new comers is spoiled, will we have enough? It would be so expensive to clean up the mess left by others. Not to mention the bodies.

The true climbers are the guides, are they not. They will take money from even novice climbers and somehow get them to the top.

I don't think it matters if they use oxygen bottles or not.

i love your answer i think that you are right in so many ways. I am still incredably torn about the o2 use but they did and I didn't so I hold them to a much higher regard!

Ps.... does anyone think its funny that hillary clinton told the nepalese? that she was named after hillary himself, saying her mom was moved and name her after him... the funny thing is, he hadn't climbed everest yet when she was born?
