The Tiny Seed By Eric Carle
This is a short story about a seed that travels from one place to another using various methods such as wind, water, and animals. The seed finally settles in a field next to a house and ends up growing into a big, beautiful flower. I use this story to teach the methods of seed travel before introducing the specifics of plant reproduction. While I am reading the book and showing the pictures, I have the students write down all of the different ways that a seed can travel. We discuss all of the different ways that a seed can travel as a whole group. I break the class into groups and assign them each a different method of travel. They are responsible for making a poster about this method. They need an illustration and a label on their posters. I display these in my classroom so that students have a constant reminder of the ways that a seed can travel. I review this before we discuss specific parts of the flower and plant reproduction.
