"In 'A Thief of Time', Tony Hillerman describes the Desert Southwest, especially the landscapes of the Colorado Plateau, marvelously. His two Navajo detectives are defined very well; the two men are not stereotypes of each other, but have separate ambitions, challenges, beliefs, and experience....

Hillerman's books are always good and full of interesting facts about the Indians and the region. Good mysteries and excellent characters.

I've read all of the Hillerman Navajo Mysteries, and they're great.

I really enjoyed this native american mystery set in the west. Read it while in the areas of Colorado and New Mexico mentioned in the book. Well developed characters, interesting plot.

I was on a Tony Hillerman kick many years ago - back when they could hardly keep the bookstore shelves stocked because his Navajo detective novels were so popular. I enjoyed these intriguing page-turners that take the reader into a world that is, although in the United States, slightly different from the world with which the reader is familiar.

    Probably the best Hillerman novel.

I love all the Hillerman books. They give a glimpse of Indian life and culture and they are good mysteries to boot.

I was never a fan of mysteries until I found Tony Hillerman's series. It was the location of all the stories (the Navajo Nation) that drew me to Hillerman. But it was his characters and simple, straightforward story-telling skills that made me read ALL of the books with Lt. Joe Leaphorn as the main protagonist.

"In 'A Thief of Time', Tony Hillerman describes the Desert Southwest, especially the landscapes of the Colorado Plateau, marvelously. His two Navajo detectives are defined very well; the two men are not stereotypes of each other, but have separate ambitions, challenges, beliefs, and experience. They are not drawn to each other because they happen to be Navajo, but because the cases they are each working on just happen to coincide. And just because they are Navajo, they don't automatically take up each other's cause, but are drawn into the mystery for different reasons. I found this to be very authentic and very refreshing, as I also found the way Hillerman describes their processes for solving crimes, with a lot of shoe leather and inductive reasoning." "An anthropologist disappears, two men are found murdered, a backhoe is missing and Joe Leaphorn, who's wife has recently died and who is retiring from the force, wants one last big case before he quits. He cooperates with junior officer Jim Chee who just wants to find out who stole that damned backhoe and murdered those two men in the truck. The book is really full of surprises and has a totally surprise ending. Not the one that I was really hoping for or betting on, but it was a shocker."

In my opinion, the third-best novel in the Jim Chee/Joe Leaphorn series. Three stars.
