Ancient, half-starved, and weary, a lost generation of sea serpents returned to the Rain Wild River to coccon. Those who survived believed that, when they hatched in the spring, they woudl rise triumphantly as fully formed dragons. But they did not anticipate the heavy toll their long quest would extract. With the dawn of spring, the proud serpents emerged as half-formed beasts, unable to fly or hunt. To complete their humiliation, the cannot survive without the aid of humans - dragon keepers that provider for them, and eventually accompany them on a dangerous trek up the Rain Wild River.

But these dragon keepers are as malformed as their charges. Rejected by Rain Wild society, they have been dispatched on a dangerous expedition to rediscover the ancient Elderling city of Kelsingra, the lost haven for dragons and Elderlings alike. But no map exists to guide them, and the dragons find their ancient memories of little use in a land changed by generations of earthquakes and seismic chaos.

As the dragons, their keepers, and their supply barge forge their way deeper into uncharted wilderness, human and beast alike discover they are changing in mysterious and dangerous ways. Starvation, flash floods and predators will threaten them, but they soon learn that the most savage threats to survival come from with their own company...
