“"The Girl with the White Flag" is a true story that takes place when there is fighting in Okinawa. The story is about a young girl, named Tomika Higa, who had an ordinary farming life, helping her family plant and harvest crops. Tomika's mother died when Tomika was very young, so her father had to take care of all of the children. Tomika helped her father make food some days. She played with her brother, and she seemed to have a great life. One day, Tomika's father had to take food to some Japanese soldiers a long distance away from home. Her father said he'd be back as soon as possible, but Tomika waited a very long time with her brother and sisters. One day, Tomika and her brother and sisters had to flee from their home because their home was in danger from being hit by a bomb. Tomika was worried because her father hadn't returned to them yet, and she was afraid they'd never see him again. All four of the children walked together in search of food and shelter. They found some places with shelter, but many of them were full of people and could not take in any more. Luckily, they found some food in abandoned farm fields, and could eat when they were hungry. One night, the four of the children buried themselves in sand on a beach and went to sleep, hoping they would be safe from danger. The next morning, when they woke up, Tomika looked at her brother. He had been hit by a stray bullet, which had went straight through his head. She was terrified and wanted to leave. When the three girls left, they reached a small town with many people in it. There were so many people that it was hard to see where they were going. Tomika had to hold onto her sister's clothes to know where she was going. A while later, Tomika looked up to see her sister, but it wasn't her sister's clothes she was grabbing, it was some random woman's. Tomika was very scared and wanted desperately to find her sisters.
Many more interesting things happen to Tomika, but there's just so much. These are some parts of the book that I really liked. I liked the part of the book where Tomika falls off of the cliff near the caves and somehow survives. This amazed me, because the way the fall was described in the book should have killed her. Another part of the book that I liked was when Tomika found the cave with the old couple. The old couple took her in and cared for her like a mother and father. They gave her food and water and everything she needed. These were my favorite parts of the book.
These are my least favorite parts of the book. I didn't like when Tomika described how she found her brother dead on the beach, because that was probably very terrifying and sad. I also didn't like the part of the book when Tomika got to the river and saw a woman drinking the from the river. I didn't like this because the river was full of blood from dead people, and that sounds disturbing and disgusting. The way Tomika said the face of the woman drinking looked also sounded terrible. These were parts of the book that I didn't like.”
