“Some time when the river is ice ask me mistakes I have made. Ask me whether what I have done is my life. Others have come in their slow way into my thought, and some have tried to help or to hurt: ask me what difference their strongest love or hate has made. I will listen to what you say. You and I can turn and look at the silent river and wait. We know the current is there, hidden; and there are comings and goings from miles away that hold the stillness exactly before us. What the river says, that is what I say.”William Stafford "Ask Me"
“Let the light of late afternoon shine through chinks in the barn, moving up the bales as the sun moves down. Let the cricket take up chafing as a woman takes up her needles and her yarn. Let evening come. Let dew collect on the hoe abandoned in long grass. Let stars appear and the moon disclose her silver horn. Let the fox go back to its sandy den. Let the wind die down. Let the shed go black inside. let evening come. To the bottle in the ditch, to the scoop in the oats, to the air in the lung let evening come. Let it come, as it will, and don't be afraid. God does not leave us comfortless, so let evening come.”Jane Kenyon "Let Evening Come"

“You don't give back to the same people who give to you. Not at all. You give to different people and they in turn will give to someone entirely different. Not you. That's the sloppy economy of gift & love.”Lorrie Moore "Who Will Run the Frog Hospital?"
“As I age, all my decisions are about time. When I turned fifty, I invented a mnemonic device to help me make good decisions about time. I needed five things in my life: respect, relationships, results, relaxation, and realization. Since then, I have tried to use the Five R's to budget my time. When I have choices to make, I ask, "Will this project bring me what I want? Will this decision make me more relaxed or respected? Will it bring results in the culture or for those I Love?"”Mary Pipher
