Drizzt and Bruenor set out on a decades-long mission to find the lost city of Gauntlgrym. Finding the ancient city has become Bruenor's only goal as he feels the weight of the centuries on his shoulders. Unfortunately for Bruenor, Jarlaxle and Athrogate find Gauntlgrym first. Without realizing what he is doing, Athrograte releases a primordial of fire from its magical prison. The primordial causes a volcanic eruption that destroys the City of Neverwinter and helps the Ashmadai start creating their dread ring.
Years pass before the Ashmadai reappear to continue the destruction they began. They attempt to kill Jarlaxle and Athrogate, the only non-Ashmadai who know the primordial's location. Dahlia, one of the Thayan nobles commanding the band of fanatics, defects to Jarlaxle's side and offers to help stop the Ashmadai plot. Jarlaxle also enlists the help of a reluctant Drizzt and Bruenor. He needs a dwarf king, and Drizzt is too good of a fighter to leave out of his plans.
After a final furious battle that involves religious fanatics, dwarf gods, salamanders, a pit fiend, and a crazy lich, Bruenor and company save Luskan and the rebuilt Neverwinter. However, the victory costs Bruenor and his loyal battlerager, Pwent, their lives. Jarlaxle and Athrogate return to Luskan, and Drizzt and Dahlia begin to plot the destruction of Dahlia's superior, Sylora Salm.
In a subplot, Barrabus the Gray, a character suspiciously reminiscent of the human assassin Artemis Entreri, has come to Neverwinter in the service of the Shadovar tiefling, Herzgo Alegni. His job is to secure Neverwinter to the Shadovar cause, which means doing anything from forcing the head of the city to name a bridge after Alegni to facing the champion of the Ashmadai in mortal combat. Salvatore gives little explanation about why the Shadovar have come to Neverwinter.
