Hi Shelfari Readers, Thanks so much for taking the time to read my debut novel, The Sense of Honor, and for sharing your thoughts. My goal was to write something that would entertain you, convey my love of history and romance, and also touch your heart. If I have done that, I am well pleased. Take care. Ashley (aka Highland Lass)

    Beautifully written historical romance

Ashley Kath-Bilsky’s debut novel is an elegantly written story. Time is 1812; for most of the setting, Kent, England. The title, The Sense of Honor, accurately describes the motivation for hero and heroine, and propels the story forward in a believable fashion.

An inherited estate and missing ward bring Devlin Grayson, the Duke of Pemberton into the path of Christiana Tatum, housekeeper at Bellewyck Abbey. Both have secrets they must keep from one another, yet the secrets weigh heavy as the two become more attracted to the other. However, the sense of honor, as in protecting those who cannot protect themselves, keeps them from blurting out the truth at first opportunity.

This was a well thought out plot and well defined characters. I enjoyed the author’s prose, her story and the way her characters slowly and believably grew into better, more trusting people. The resolution was very satisfying. There are sensuous scenes, not at all gratuitous but well written, which add to the story. Anyone who as a child had dreams about their own knight in shining armor will love this story. I did. I highly recommend The Sense of Honor and look forward to her next novel.

Devlin Grayson, Duke of Pemberton, has just inherited Bellewyck Abbey from a relative he didn't even know about. However, not only is there the Abbey with its disturbing lack of valuables, there is the mysterious issue of a ward. Lord Bellewyck's will mentions a ward, but gives no other information. When Mr. Higgenbotham, the solicitor, visited the Abbey and inquired about the ward, every servant insisted there was no ward. Pemberton is disturbed by this information. Judging from what Mr. Higgenbotham has found, it would appear the servants of Bellewyck Abbey may be thieves, but could they also be murderers? In order to learn the truth, Pemberton and his friends decide that he should travel to the Abbey in disguise. Pretending to be Mr. Randolph, steward to the Duke, Pemberton hopes to learn what's really going on.

Christiana Tatum is nervous and with good reason. Bellewyck Abbey has many secrets and she can't afford to have Mr. Randolph around asking questions. She has no doubt that if he knew the truth he'd run straight to the Duke and then they'd all be in trouble. Bellewyck Abbey is her home and its people are her family. Christiana will do whatever it takes to protect them.

Despite their best efforts, Christiana and Devlin find themselves drawn to each other. Both of them are aware that they must protect their own secrets, and neither of them is sure they can trust the other. But when love enters the picture, none of that seems to matter.

Ashley Kath-Bilsky has done a wonderful job with THE SENSE OF HONOR. I loved this one and I'd love to see more. The banter between Devlin and Christiana is priceless. She's a headstrong woman who can match wits with the best of them. Devlin is great, and despite his titled position, he really does care. Sometimes he needs Christiana to put things in perspective, but eventually he comes around.
