“Oh dear. This novel confirms something I've long suspected -- that Thackeray was somewhat of a one hit wonder. You'll find none of the lively wit or social satire of "Vanity Fair" here. Instead, it's just plod, plod, plod of a boring plot and an author who seems too bored himself to keep up with it. A total snooze-fest.”
