Characters edit see section history

  • Phoebe Rothschild: Pheobe comes from a very prominent family that has an extensive and prestigious history. She feels everyone in her family is special and extraordinary in ways she is not. She finds it hard to believe in herself and find something that is special about her, other than being a Rothschild. Her best friend is Mallory, but before Mallory, it was Claudette, who she really didn't like all that much. Her family is of high prestige within the community due in part to their historical lineage--mainly Mayor Rothschild.
  • Mallory Tolliver: Mallory is Phoebe's best friend, who she met in 7th grade. The odd girl out with a large amount of compassion.
  • Catherine Rothschild: Pheobe's mother and a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Considered extraordinary by Phoebe.
  • Drew Vale: Pheobe's father. He writes documentaries, but does not work very often. He is 15 years younger than his wife Catherine, and many people believe him to be her 'boy toy'. Dropped out of school.
  • Ryland Fayne: Mallory's older brother who Phoebe is inexplicably attracted to.
  • Mayer Rothschild: Long passed ancestor to Phoebe Rothschild who was once desparately poor and in need of help and guidance in order to help sustain his family in order to sustain their family unit.
  • Benjamin Michaud: Pheobe's "friend" from Nantucket. He often gives her advice and insights.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “History affects the present. The history of our family and our people affects who we are in the present.”
    Mallory Tolliver
  • “You had me wishing I was a Christian. So I could call you a Judas.”
    Phoebe Rothschild
  • “Think of babies. There's no reason to love a baby for anything but the fact that it's there. The baby doesn't do anything to earn love, except being little and cute, which all babies are automatically. So, the baby is ordinary, right? But it feels special and fabulous before it even understands language, just because everybody is cooing over it and cuddling it and feeding it and loving it.”
    Phoebe Rothschild
  • “If somebody loves the baby and takes care of it, then automatically, the baby believes it's special. And that conviction gets, sort of, baked permanently into its feelings.”
    Phoebe Rothschild
  • “Maybe life teaches the baby--not a baby anymore--that he or she isn't extraordinary. But because of all that love right from the start, deep inside, he or she can never really believe it completely. He or she is secretly convinced of his specialness. That's what early parental love gives to you. it's primal. It's probably why the human race survives.”
    Phoebe Rothschild
  • “Is being. . . extraordinary--maybe it's not about being that way all the time, every minute of life? Because that's not really possible. Not even my mother is that. But maybe it's about learning that you have something deep inside that you can reach for when you really need it. Strength. Strength that helps you do whatever it is you need to do, when you need to do it.”
    Phoebe Rothschild
