• Padyn Maclaren: Laird of the Maclaren clan, wedded to the only daughter of Laird Graham, Aila. Emotionally distant because of a past betrayal.
• Chaumont: The exceptionally charming and well-attired French knight in the service of Padyn Maclaren.
• Lady Aila Graham: The submissive daughter of Laird Graham, intended for the church. She has beautiful fire-red lochs and a love for horse riding. Has a tendency to recite passages from the bible to herself in Latin.
• Dundaff: Add a description of this character.
• Mcnab: The cowardly clan, generally disliked by all the others. He is a scraping and conniving laird who has lost all respect (although this may be in part because of the extremely poor circumstances he comes from).
• Mary Patrick: Padyn's cousin and love interest of Chaumont. Has a son named Gavin and is fiercly proud of the land she calls home.
