Why do cats purr? Purring signals a friendly social mood, and it can be given as a signal to, say, a vet from an injured cat indicating the need for friendship, or as a signal to an owner, saying thank you for friendship given.
Why does a cat rub up against your leg when it greets you? scent-exchange. The cat reads our scent signals by the flank-rubbing element of the greeting, followed by the cat sitting down and 'tasting' us with its tongue through the simple process of licking the fur it has just rubbed so carefully against us.
Why do some cats hop up on their hind legs when greeting you? typical cat-to-cat greeting of rubbing faces with one another. This greeting hop is therefore a token survival of a head-to-head contact.
Why does a cat bury its faeces? It was only the weaker, more subdued cats which hid their faeces. The fact that our pet cats always seem to carry out such a careful burying routine is a measure of the extent to which they see themselves dominated by us.
Why does a cat spend so much time grooming its fur? when it licks its fur a cat is protecting itself, not only from dirt and disease, but also from exposure to cold, from overheating, from vitamin deficiency, from social tension, from foreign odours and from getting drenched to the skin. Allogrooming is common not only between mother and kitten, but also between adult cats that have grown up together and have developed a close social bond.
Why does a cat wag its tail? The cat is in a state of conflict. It wants to do two things at once.
Why does a tomcat spray urine on the garden wall? they function rather as newspapers do for us.
Why does a cat hiss? It seems likely that the similarity between the hiss of a cat and that of a snake is not accidental.
Why does a cat chatter its teeth when it sees a bird through the window? This is what is known as a 'vacuum activity'. The cat is performing its highly specialized killing-bite, as if it already had the unfortunate bird clamped between its jaws. Careful observation of the way in which cats kill their prey has revealed that there is a peculiar jaw movement employed to bring about an almost instantaneous death.
Why does a cat sometimes play with its prey before killing it? this is not the behavior of a wild cat.
a. For such a cat, the occasional catching of a little field mouse, or a small bird, is a great event. It cannot bear to end the chase, prolonging it as much as possible until the prey dies.
b. It is the behavior of a cat that is not too sure of itself.
Why do cats present freshly caught prey to their human owners? They do this because they consider their owners such hopeless hunters. The correct reaction would be to praise the cat for its maternal generosity, take the prey from it with many compliments and strokings and then quietly dispose of it.
Why do cats eat grass? The most recent opinion and the most likely explanation is that cats chew grass to obtain minute quantities of a chemical substance that they cannot obtain from a meat diet and which is essential to their health. The substance in question is a vitamin called folic acid, and it is vital to cats because it plays an important role in the production of haemoglobin.
How do kittens avoid squabbling when feeding from the mother? Within a few days of birth each kitten has developed an attachment to its own personal nipple, which it recognizes with ease. Amazing as it may sound, this is possible because each nipple has a special smell.
Why does a cat move its kittens to a new nest? The first, old nest had to be chosen for maximum snugness and security. The kittens were so helpless then and needed protection above all else. But during the second month of their lives, after their teeth have broken through, they need to learn how to bite and chew the prey animals brought by the mother. So a second nest is needed to facilitate this. The primary consideration now is proximity to the best food supply, reducing the mother's task of repeatedly bringing food to her young.
Why does a kitten sometimes throw a toy into the air when Playing? hunting fish movements
Why do cats sneer? For the cat is employing a sense organ that we sadly lack. The cat's sixth sense is to be found in a small structure situated in the roof of the mouth. It is a little tube opening into the mouth just behind the upper front teeth. Known as the vomero-nasal or Jacobsen's organ, it is about half an inch long and is highly sensitive to airborne chemicals.
Why does a cat lick its face when it is not dirty? a cat is becoming agitated, while at the same time being fascinated or puzzled by something
Why do cats react so strongly to catnip? because they are junkies (not every individual)
How does a cat find its way home? earth's magnetic field
Can cats predict earthquakes? yes
... these are some of the questions asked / answered.
