I learned so much from reading this book about the famous schoolchildren's blizzard that I had heard of while growing up in North Dakota. There is plenty of data, but it is to simply paint a very clear picture of how serious this blizzard was. This book was fascinating in the fact it is a true story, but sometimes the technical aspects of the weather monitoring was a little boring. The weather that our pioneers endured is a testament to the true "pioneer Spirit" that we Americans hear about these days. I really enjoyed the authors notes in the back of the book.

I liked this simple book about a winter in 1888. I found it factual and interesting, and gave a glimpse on what was going on in the context of weather and meteorology backthen, withoutbe opinionated or subjecting me to extra drama (the story was dramatic enough). Anyone thinking about how to survive in difficult circumstances would probably find this fascinating..Warning to all: if you are freezing to death and make it to daylight, DON'T STAND UP!!
