Didn’t Like It“Other than a few clever plot twists and red herrings, this story is awful. There's no mystery - you already know whodunit. It's just a matter of whether or not they'll get away with it. Since the author does absolutely nothing to make you care about any of the characters (victim or killer),...” see full review » see other reviews » |

I love Donald Westlake's comic crime series (Dortmunder and others) and admire the quality and quantity of writing he produces. Three-quarters of this book I really enjoyed--the parts about writing, publishing, the motivations and challenges the two different authors faced. The grisly, murder-scenes of this book (both written and the implied) made my stomach plunge. Well-written, to be sure, and that I was stunned even when I knew what was coming--actually "I can't believe that just happened..." stunned--speaks to that. But I did walk away from it with that vaguely ill, restless, want to get away from this and go for a walk with my kid in the park, maybe blow some bubbles for him, or listen to some Muppets records. Anything to leave behind that dark residue on my reading soul. I get the same feeling when I read Stephen King or watch CSI or too much Lifetime Network victim-of-the-week dramas. Not since Gone with the Wind have I loved and hated a book in such equal measure. Overall, I'd have to say it's a good book, well-written; probably just not my genre. Despite that, I still liked a lot about it.”
