"Moon Dance, by J.R. Rain, is a vampire detective novel. Neither of those are my genres; I've never had much interest in vampires or detectives. Yet I enjoyed this immensely; it was the most fun novel of this present collection. The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a female vampire with a husband and children. Those predate her condition; six years ago she was attacked by a vampire and rendered into one. Now she's trying to carry on with family and private eye business, and she's a feisty, skilled person, so is doing mostly okay. It is not a horror story; she buys animal blood to eat and doesn't generally prey on humans. But her husband has an increasing problem with her coldness--not of spirit, but of body. 'You sicken me and scare the hell out of me,' he tells her. 'And when I touch you it's all I can do to not gag.' She replies, 'Words every wife wants to hear.' I love this! She really doesn't deserve to be frozen out of her marriage, yet his attitude is understandable. In the course of the novel she solves the mystery she is tackling for a client, and finds a new romantic interest. What makes it special are her character and nature. I sure wouldn't have kicked her out of bed. I recommend it as light reading, odd as that may sound."

--Piers Anthony, New York Times bestselling author of A SPELL FOR CHAMELEON and ON A PALE HORSE

Characters edit see section history

  • Samantha Moon: Samantha is the main character. She was attacked six years ago by an old vampire and became one. She is thirty-seven, looks twenty-seven, (no wrinkles) and her muscles are taut because she works out regularly at Jacky’s boxing gym. She has become immortal. She continues to work, not as a federal agent for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, but as a PI out of her home. She tells people she had an accident and was forced to work at her single-story home. She is able to continue to associate with family, friends and business associates because she has convinced them that she has a skin condition called xeroderma pigmentosum. It is the reason she is so pale and has to stay out of the sun. She does not feed on others for their blood, but has an account with a butchery in Norco to deliver blood to her home once a month. She buys a monthly supply of blood and keeps in a locked freezer in the garage. Samantha has received an ancient golden medallion with an intricate Celtic cross engraved across the face and embedded with the cross formed by precisely cut rubies, were three red roses, also delivered by UPS. It is the same medallion worn by her attacker. She drives a Ford Windstar minivan with heavily tinted windows and loves to watch Judge Judy eat idiots on TV. She watches a video clip showing Kingley being shot, she wishes she could eat popcorn and peanut M&M's, but can have neither. She can easily sense when someone is looking at her and sense people when they smile without looking at them. She can drink water and wine, but not red wine. She has highly attuned hunches, strength and speed to be successful at her private investigator job. Her sister believes Samantha is a good wife and sister. Samantha compares herself to the hero in a show called "The Greatest American Hero" because she is learning as she goes.
  • Anthony Moon: One of several children, he is Samantha’s son. He is in third grade, which makes him eight years old.
  • Chad Helling: Samantha’s ex-partner at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD. They worked together in the HUD department (where he still works) busting real estate scam artists and loan swindlers. He provides Sam with information on person’s of interest to her cases.
  • Danny Moon: Samantha’s husband. In the beginning he is was very supportive and helped her transition from the FBI to working at home, but as the years went by, he realized how scared he was of the “monster” she had become and decides he must get her away from himself and the children. At the beginning of the story we find he is no longer affectionate with her and he is seeing another woman.
  • Desmond Beacon: Boxing champion in the Marines. He and Samantha box it out at Jacky’s and he ends up in the hospital.
  • Detective Sherbet: He is assigned to Fulcrums shooting case. He closes the case, but has his suspicions. In his report he states that the shooting was a random act of violence, but that is because there is no other evidence to say otherwise. He is sixty-seven, a fit man with a cops built and a cop’s mustache. He has a son who is eight years old, leans towards being gay and this is upsetting the manly man in Detective Sherbet. He guesses the first time he meets Samantha that she is a vampire, but dismisses it because that just can’t be.
  • Elias: The uncle of Gilberto who accidentally kills him.
  • Fang950: Fang as Sam calls him, IM'd Sam directly soon after she started visiting the chat room called Creatures of the Night. They become close internet friends quickly and she relies on him for support and as an outlet to release all what is happening to her. She tells him everything. He doesn’t share much about himself with Sam, except that he is twenty-eight years old, lives in Missouri and has fallen in love with the image he has of her.
  • Franklin: Kingsley Fulcrum’s butler. Sam notices that there are things not quite right with him. For example, one of his ears is a lot bigger than the other and he has a scar that extends the whole of his neck.
  • Gilberto: He is the leader of a gang that Sam meets in a bad neighborhood one night when she is out jogging. He becomes her first taste of blood from a physical body, all-be-it that it is a corpse.
  • Hewlett Jackson: Client of Kingsley Fulcrum’s and was accused of murdering his lover’s husband. He was released on a technicality, the search warrant had expired and all of the evidence was no longer valid. He was later killed with 9 shots to the head.
  • Jacky: Owner of Jacy’s boxing gym and is Sam’s trainer. He is a graying, powerfully built Irishman man of medium height, a little fat now, but not soft. He’s around sixty, but looks forty. He is an ex-professional boxer from Ireland.
  • Mr. Kingsley Fulcrum: Samantha's first client mentioned in the book. He hires Samantha to find the person who ambushed and shot him five times at the courthouse. He is tall, broad shouldered with thick back hair that is speckled with gray and touches his shoulders. He is a successful defense attorney known for doing whatever it takes to get his clients free. He had just gotten Hewlett Jackson out of jail on a technicality when he was shot. He also has a big secret like Sam and is falling in love with her. Detective Sherbet is the homicide detective working Kingsley's case.
  • Mary Lou: Samantha’s sister, not the only sibling, but the only one she has recently confided in. Mary Lou is six years older than Sam. Within the family dynamic she and Samantha are the closest in age and had grown up best friends. They live in the same city.
  • Randolf: He is a good looking man, tall and slender with spiky blond hair. He became a vampire hunter when one of them killed his brother. While searching for the vampire who killed his brother, he finds out about Sam when he kills the vampire who attacked her. Samantha recognizes him as the UPS man. She decides not to kill him and persuades him in a creative way not to come back and try to kill her again.
  • Rick Horton and Janet Maurice: Siblings of the victim Hewlett Jackson allegedly killed. When the verdict was read, Rick lunged at Fulcrum and had to be physically restrained. Rick lives in an upscale neighborhood in a two-story Gothic revival house. He is a small man with wire-rimmed glasses. Samantha finds incriminating material in his home regarding the killing of Hewlett Jackson and others he might harm. These two may be suspects in the investigation of who shot Kingsley Fulcrum.
  • Rick: The young mechanic at a repair shop in Fullerton who helps look under Samantha’s minivan to find the tracking device.
  • Sara Benson: Kingsley Fulcrum’s secretary. She is about twenty-five, small in stature with straight brown hair, large breasts and is physically fit. She believes that Kingsley is the best defense attorney around. She doesn’t approve of the fact that he has no issue with getting so many of his clients free from punishment because of a technicality. She is also in love with him.
  • Tammy Moon: Samantha’s daughter. She is older than her brother Anthony. She is talking to boys on the phone now, but is still in elementary school.
  • Fang: Add a description of this character.
