Midnighters #3: Blue Noon (Midnighters)

by Scott Westerfeld

the darklings will hunt once again

The secret hour when time freezes arrives every night at midnight in Bixby, Oklahoma. It's a dangerous time, when five teenagers are the only humans awake and dark creatures crawl out of the shadows, but at least the midnight hour is regular and predictable.

Until suddenly, the blue time comes . . . in the middle of the day.

I would give this series 2.5 stars if I could for its original premise alone. However, it's hobbled by characters that never seem to fully develop, and a plot that takes far too long to make its point. Trimmed down, this would have made an excellent stand-alone novel, but at three books it feels padded and repetitive.

I hate that the series is over. It was really good. I started the series in the 8th grade when the first book was on the "Texas Reading list". I read the 3rd and final book last year in the 10th grade. (Do the math to figure what grade I'm in now.) I wish there was some sort of spinoff series to continue their adventures.
