- Harvey Cheyne Jr.: A rich, spoiled brat who is thrown overboard and winds up on the "We're Here," a small fishing boat.
- Disko Troop: Captain of the "We're Here," a simple man who knows what's what in the world. He picks Harvey up and puts him to work on the "We're Here"
- Danny: Harvey's first friend on the "We're Here" and Disko's son. A mischievous boy who's been on the ocean since he was a baby, basically.
- Harvey Cheyne Sr.: Harvey's father.
- Penn: A crazed preacher originally from Pennsylvania who lost his mind when his family died in a fire. He has been on the "We're Here" and looked out for by Uncle Salters since.
- Manuel: A Portuguese sailor aboard the "We're Here," who originally rescued Harvey in a dory.
- Uncle Salters: Tough, rough, and Disko's brother. Has a sentimental side to him which keeps him looking after Penn.
- Otto: A young sailor swept overboard on the "We're Here" before Harvey comes aboard.
- Constance Cheyne: Harvey's mother. Very worriesome and delicate.
