• Jessica Day: She's a red head, and a Midnighter, but Melissa says that "something's not right about her."
• Dess: Dess is the polymath. She can do math quickly in her head and instinctively knows things that normal people would have to do research and calculate.
• Melissa the Mindcaster: Melissa is a psychic who reads minds, to her vast annoyance, as listening to minds gives her headaches. Because of this, she can seem rather mean.
• Rex Green: He's a seer who can find what's hidden and wears all black.
• Jonathan Martinez: The bad boy of the Midnighters, and an acrobat who "flies" by adjusting gravity. After a fight with Rex, he separated and now does his own thing.
• Beth: Jessica's 13-year old sister. She doesn't get along with Jessica very well.

• Bottom/Snake Pit: A particularly strange location. Mysterious for locals, dangerous on occasion for midnighters, possible home of darklings. Located in the badlands outside of Bixby
• Bixby, Oklahoma: The town/city where the novel takes place. Thought of as weird by its residents because mysterious things seem to occur and its history might explain some of it, at least to midnighters.

• Midnighter: A person born at precisely midnight, who has the ability to access the secret 25th hour of the day. Has a special ability (ESP, genius, etc.), which works properly only during that hour.
• Blue time: The secret 25th hour of the day, curled too tightly for all but 1 in 86,400 people to see. Time seems to freeze, and the only illumination is an eerie blue from the enormous moon.
• Slither: A small, shape-shifting creature that only comes out during the blue hour.
• Darkling: A large, terrifying shape-shifter that only comes out during the blue hour. Incredibly intelligent and deadly.
