I tend to like epic novels, and this DEFINITELY qualifies - it takes the reader through the entire history of the state of Hawaii from its volcanic beginnings, weaving a wonderful fictional story with vivid characters, through colonization by Polynesians, invasion of missionaries and the...

This book does an excellent job of explaining how it is that different groups of people come to misunderstand one another.

I tend to like epic novels, and this DEFINITELY qualifies - it takes the reader through the entire history of the state of Hawaii from its volcanic beginnings, weaving a wonderful fictional story with vivid characters, through colonization by Polynesians, invasion of missionaries and the culmination of becoming a part of the United States. Don't think that this is a boring story - this novel is rich, and full of romance, humor and drama.

This is a masterful work of art and I truly enjoyed reading every page. However, I felt that his depiction of some Christian ideas were a little too harsh and not entirely accurate. I saw the movie, but didn't really enjoy it.

Maybe a bit too long! From when dinosaurs roamed until the mid-50s. Michener traces the missionary families that came from New England to establish a Christian society, as well as two founding families, one with roots in China, the other, from Japan, who affected the history of Hawaii.
