Reprinted in 2010 as "The Town".

The men wear masks. Their guns are drawn on the bank manager. She nervously recites the alarm code, and the tumblers within the huge vault fall. The timing and execution are brilliant. It could be the perfect heist. But as the huge sum of cash is stolen,... read more

Summary edit see section history

Chuck Hogan spent a lot of time in C-Town soaking up the atmosphere of those who were going nowhere--or alternatively-- to prison-fast. At least one of characters is not so much a composite of a Townie as a semi-biographical portrait. Boston is a small place . . .

Characters/People edit see section history

  • Doug 'Duggy' Macray: Doug is a very sympathetic character. Although he has made bad life choices and has done questionable things, you will find yourself routing for him to pull through and turn his life around...even if you realize this probably won't happen.
  • Adam Frawley: He is a completely despicable character. Although he is a cop working to catch the "bad guys", his methods are crooked and his thought process is warped. He clearly has let the power get to his head, and epitomizes what a bad cop looks like.
  • Dino Ciampa: Add a description of this character.
  • James 'Jem' Coughlin: Jem is a character that is sympathetic and terrifying at once. He is clearly troubled, and yet the reader will sometimes pity him because he is a victim of circumstance. Although he is the best friend of the protagonist, he actually acts as the antagonist at some points. He is hot-headed, an addict, a bad influence, and arguably a bad person. His one redeeming quality is the love he has for his friend, Doug.
  • Krista Coughlin
  • Cheryl
  • Albert 'Gloansy' Magloan
  • Desmond 'Dez' Elden
  • Frank G.
  • Claire Keesey: The love interest of the protagonist, Claire is lost and confused after her bank is held up. Despite being an adult, she seems to revert back to a fragile child-like state after the robbery. Her life is turned upside down when she meets Doug. He is able to help her, and she finds herself falling in love with him. Little does she know, he's one of the people responsible for her traumatic experience.
  • Shyne Coughlin: Krista Coughlin's daughter. A slow girl, which is apparent even though her mother and uncle refuse to acknowledge this.
