Summary: This is an amazing poetry book. All the poems are about animals have beautiful illustrations to go along with them.
Reason I Chose This Book: I chose this book because it is full of great example of how poems can look. It has a variety of poem structures and fun pictures for the students to look at.
Classroom Use: This book could be a great resource for information about an animal or examples of good poetry. I would use this book during a poetry unit and read a couple of poems from it daily to the entire class.

While Eric Carle’s books are primarily written for very young kids, this book can be extended since it deals with poetry. This book is a collection of poems about animals that is illustrated by Eric Carle. I chose this book because I wanted a good book of poetry, and Eric Carle’s work is always amazing. This book could have many applications. While it is good to work with poetry and get the kids to write their own, I think I’d want to link the poems to the actual animals. I’d have the students Pick a poem and create a powerpoint presentation with facts about that animal, and include a poem about themselves.

I read Eric Carle's Animals Animals to my daughter today. It is a collection of poems about animals by various poets. Eric Carle has illustrated the book and like all his work they are colorful and beautiful. I really enjoyed the variety of poems included in the collection. It has some poems that were obviously written for kids and others that were not necessarily written for kids. One of my favorites was "Bat" by D.H. Lawrence. It describes a bat flying through the air and compares it to "a black glove thrown up at the light, And falling back." Another of my favorites was "Butterfly" by Benjamin Franklin. It was a simple two line poem (What is a butterfly? At best/He's but a caterpillar dressed.) I found myself thinking about it after I finished reading the book. My daughter (3 years old) enjoyed the sillier peoms more than the descriptive ones. Her favorites were "The Birthday Cow," which wished a cow a "Happy Mooday" and ""Quack!" Said the Billy Goat," which described some mixed up farm animals. She also really liked the colorful illustrations. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Eric Carle's art or who wants a fun poetry collection to share with children.
