This book Herbet's Wormhole by Peter Nelson and Rohitash Rao is about two boys named Herbert and Alex and their adventures during one summer.
In the beginning of the story Alex is playing his video game, Alien Slayer. It is the only way he knows how to pass the time of his boring summer. He is about to finish the game and so he makes a deal with his Mom and Dad. If his parent's buy him Alien Slayer 2, then he'll go outside and play the rest of the summer. They agree and also buy him a playset with a slide, a rockwall and swings. His parents arrange a play date for him with a boy named Herbert.
Alex goes to Herbert's house. Alex gets attacked by Herbert's inventions. Alex finally gets to Herbert's room. Herbert has just gotten Alien Slayer 3-d. That comes with two sensor suits and three weapons. Herbert has modified the suits to go through walls. They both put on suits and go to Alex's play set.
While Alex is sitting on the play set he flips on his suit and begins to be sucked into the slide. Alex yells for Herbert. Herbert starts walking over and is complaining about how expensive the suits are. Herbert climbs up the ladder and begins to be sucked into the slide also. They both fall down the slide. Alex hits the ground. They think they are in the past but they are actually in a museum in the future. They discover in the museum that throughout time there has been an unseen alien race know as G'Daliens. They trashed the scene they came from, they walked out of the museum and into the city and see future buildings, flying cars, and hoover buses.
They make a new friend with a boy named Chicago. They go to a pizzeria and the seats fly. They come outside the pizzeria and find out that Chicago's Dad is the G'Dalien and human enforcement (police). They also find out that Chicago plays T-ball and his Dad coached the team. When the team gets there Chicago, Herbert and Alex hop into the flying cop car. Chicago's Dad gets a call to go to the museum. When they arrive, the janitor is on the top step of the museum and there is a crowd of humans and G'Daliens. The janitor thinks that Alex and Herbert are G'Dalien slayers from the future. The G'Dalien's janitor notices them and says those are the two. They quickly hop into the cop car and try to drive it into the museum. They crash into the museum, hop out and run to the exhibit. They flip on their suits and go through the wormhole and come out the side.
Herbert takes the suits back. Sammi the neighbor comes over and Alex agrees to take him to the future so they agree to meet at the slide tomorrow. Sammi and Alex go into Herbert's room and steal the suits and go visit the future.
Ales's mom gives Herbert a game thinking they can play it together. It also comes with two suits. Herbert takes the suits and modifies them and goes after Alex and Sammi.
Alex and Sammi have gone to a t-ball game and are filling in on Chicago's dad's team. The Janitor sees them and announces that they are all alien slayers. Old Herbert goes onto the game
and is able to defeat the G'Daliens. Everyone thinks it is real because of the game being 3-d. They are seen as heros and are given a card to the city.
Alex, Sammi ,and Herbert all return home.
