• Elena Gilbert: A young girl that over the course of the books has been killed, turned into a vampire, then killed as a vampire, then returns to life as a very powerful mortal, a mortal with "Wing" abilities, due to her love for a vampire, Stefan Salvatore , who she met in high school. She goes through tough situations throughout all the books, and in the Return books, falls in love with Stefan's vampire brother, Damon, a vampire that craves for her and her blood.
• Stefan Salvatore: Stefan is the lover of Elena, who would do anything for her. He was born in the late 15th century, along with his brother Damon. The boys both fell in love with Katherine, a vampire who turned both the brothers into vampires. She died after the brothers turned into vampires, so that the brothers could be friends, but it didn't work. Stefan grieved over Katherine, and his brother then promised an eternity of misery for Stefan for having killed her.
• Damon Salvatore: Damon, the other Salvatore brother, is a bad vampire. He feeds off of humans, either by force or by donated blood. Damon was turned by Katherine, and he never stopped loving her until he met Elena after coming to Fells Church, Virginia to ruin his brother, Stefan's life. He then fell in love with Elena also, and he wanted Elena as his "Princess of the Shadows". She refuses all the time, and through-out the books keeps on trying to ruin Stefan's and Elena's relationship.
• Bonnie: One of Elena's best friends, she finds in the first book that she turns out to be a witch, from a long line of Salem Witches, and she helps the Salvatore Brothers and Elena with their problems all the time. She has a tiny crush on Damon, the other Salvatore brother.
• Matt: Elena's ex-boyfriend, Matt helps Elena with her problems through-out the series. He has a difficult life, with his mother always with men, and his sister, Vicky, deceased. He has a horrible love-life after Elena, and still has never gotten over Elena. He goes out with Caroline, a friend and later enemy of Elena. After Caroline's parents ask for Matt to be arrested because Caroline finds herself pregnant, he is set on the run from the police, so he joins Elena and Damon on their quest during the return series.
• Meredith: One of Elena's most trust worthy friends, she fights more than Bonnie does, but is always a loyal friend, even in "slavery" in the Return series.
• Sage: The mysterious man/vampire that Elena meets by the ways of Damon. He helps the gang find and free Stefan in the second book of the Return series, and he keeps to himself.
• Caroline: The ex of Matt, she is carrying Tyler Smallwood's child in the Return series. She blames her pregnancy on Matt, because Tyler is a respectable man, and therefore she has to pin it on someone. Now, because Tyler is a werewolf, and the baby is too, Caroline is supposed to become a werewolf too!
• Tyler Smallwood: The father of Caroline's baby, he is a werewolf and the son of the mayor.
• Kitsune Twins: Brother and sister who, over the course of the return series, imprisons Stefan Salvatore, takes over Damon's mind, and seeks to take over Fells Church
• Shinichi: An evil kitsune that wishes to see Elena and her friends dead.
• Misao: evil kitsune that terrorize Fall Church with possessing children.
• Mrs. Flowers: owner of the boarding house where Stefan lives and witch.
• Alaric: Meredith's boyfriend and archealogist.
• Isobel: was possesed by Misao and her brother, comes long line of shrine priestress, and friend to Matt and his friends.
• Jessalyn: vampire princess in Dark Dimension

• Dr. Alpert: Fall Church's doctor that help Matt and friends with possessed children.
