Widely acclaimed for his work completing Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time saga, Brandon Sanderson now begins a grand cycle of his own, one every bit as ambitious and immersive.
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.
It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them.
One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.
Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by over-powering visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.
Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar’s niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan’s motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.

  • Gavilar Kholin: The former Alethi King who died 5 years earlier, brutally assassinated by the "Assassin in White". His death put an end to the peace treaty he had just signed with the Parshendi engaging the whole kingdom in a fruitless war to settle the "Vengeance Pact". It was known that he had hallucinations towards the end of his life, speaking in gibberish and mentioning an ancient book entitled "The Way of Kings."
  • Szeth-son-son-Vallano aka Szeth-son-Neturo aka The Assassin in White aka Truthless of Shinovar: An assassin from the land of Shinovar. He refers to himself as a "Truthless" who must serve those who bear his Oathstone. Bearer of a Shardblade and a Windrunner. As a truthless he is forced to obey those who own his Oathstone although he cannot kill himself nor give his blade to anybody. Owned by the Parshendi five years prior to the beginning of the story, he had been ordered to kill Gavilar for reasons he, himself ignores. Since then he's been owned by petty thieves and crooks who never understood the extent of his abilities.
  • Kaladin Stormblessed: A darkeye, or peasant, from the nation of Alethkar during the main timeline of the book who is forced to serve on a bridge crew in the army of Highprince Sadeas. Formerly an apprentice learning surgery from his father, and a member of the army of the Brightlord Amaram.
  • Tien: Kaladin's younger brother. Small for his age, he always wore a smile and had a strange fascination for stones. He died brutally during the war. His death started a change in Kaladin...
  • Syl: A mysterious windspren who slowly changes after meeting Kaladin. At first just a normal spren, she discovers she has a name - an oddity for a spren - slowly starts to remember her forgotten past and understand human concepts such as "death", "lying", "good" or "bad". She develops a true friendship with the young bridgeman.
  • Shallan Davar: A minor lighteye, or noble, from the nation of Jah Keved. Her family has fallen on hard times after the death of her father. She seeks to be accepted as the ward & student of the scholar Jasnah Kholin, sister to King Elhokar of Alethkar. A skilled artist who can with a single glance remember and recreate a scene.
  • Navani Kholin: Widow of King Gavilar, mother of King Elhokar and Jasnah. A skilled artifabrian (one who creates devices known as fabrials).
  • Wit: The King of Alethkar's "Wit", similar to a Jester. His real name is unknown but he also refers to himself as Hoid, a recurring name in Brandon Sanderson's works.
  • Dalinar Kholin aka the Blackthorn: A Highprince of Alethkar, brother to the slain King Gavilar, uncle to the current king. Nicknamed the Blackthorn. A general who helped unite the kingdom with his brother. A man who experiences visions during the highstorms. Bearer of a Shardblade and Shardplate. The former King's younger brother and current King's Uncle. Cannot forgive himself for not being able to protect his brother when the latter was assassinated five years earlier. One of the few Highprinces who follow the Codes, is fiercely loyal and overprotective of the King. Has strange visions containing bits and pieces of the past when highstorms occur which threatens his position as it diminishes his credibility. Shardbearer.
  • Adolin Kholin: A lighteye of Alethkar and heir to his father Dalinar's highprince seat. A skilled duelist and a bearer of a Shardblade and Shardplate. Dalinar's oldest son. Is 23. Believes his father is going mad but still fiercely loyal to him. Hope his father regain his Alethi spirit and fights back the rumors that surround him. Suspects Sadeas of plotting against his father and eventually the King and is sure his father is going mad. Shardbearer.
  • Renarin Kholin: Dalinar's youngest son. Known to be a bit "slow" and of not having inherited Dalinar's talent for swordsmanship like his older brother. Although belittled by other highprinces, Renarin doesn't feel any animosity or jealousy towards either his father and brother to whom he remains fiercely loyal.
  • Lady Navani: King Gavilar's widow. Mother of Jasnah and Elhokar, she's a scholar who specializes in fabrial engineering. Has been courted by both Gavilar and Dalinar in her younger days before choosing to marry Gavilar. Her feelings for Dalinar are obscure although she appears to be the only woman - with Jasnah - that Dalinar fully trusts.
  • Brightness Jasnah Kholin: Only daughter of Gavilar, Jasnah is a heretic scholar who calls herself a "Veristitalian" i.e she searches " for answers in the past, reconstructing what truly happened" choosing "projects that <she> feels were misunderstood or misrepresented" in order "to better understand the present". She currently studies the voidbringers and the legends about the radiants which she thinks must be related to the assassination of her father. She is also one of the most powerful soulcaster of the Kingdom of Alethkar which is quite particular since she's no believer and only ardents are allowed and given the secrets of using soulcasting. Wise but fiercely independent, she likes to think for herself and hates the way ardents want everybody to believe in what they consider the truth. She is also extremely fond of her uncle Dalinar.
  • Elhokar Kholin: The Alethkar King. Brother of Jasnah, he took his father's place after his brutal assassination. Described as paranoid, he's certain assassins are out there to kill him. Still quite immature, he relies heavily on the advice of highprinces Sadeas and Dalinar to rule his Kingdom although his paranoia has led him to suspect Dalinar of plotting against him. Completely clueless when it comes to authority and political intrigues, he doesn't know that his very decisions are making the Kingdom even more instable.

Glossary edit see section history

  • Thunderclast: An enormous stone beast with a vaguely skeletal shape, long limbs, and riblike protusions from its chest. It has granite shoulders and deep red eyes, set in an arrowhead shaped face. Its hand is as long as a man is tall.
  • Surgebinder: One who practices Surgebinding. The Radiant's were an order of Surgebinders.
  • Surgebinding: A talent where the wielder uses the power of Stormlight. To power Surgebinding, the user literally consumes Stormlight, drawing the light through their mouth into their bodies. They must then hold their breath to keep the Stormlight contained, which in turns allows them to invoke their abilities. As a Surgebinder invokes their abilities, the Stormlight that is used slowly leeches out of their bodies through their pores, causing the wielder to glow, or radiate light. The more powerful the ability the more powerful the glow. The Radiant's were able to use Surgebinding and Windrunning is a type of Surgebinding.
  • Dustbringer: Describe this term.
  • Shardblade: powerful swords which have the ability to cut through any non-living matter with ease. When used on living creatures they can kill with a single cut, when the blade passes through the spine, or render limbs useless when they cut through them. The only known defenses against a Shardblade are Shardplate.
  • Desolation
  • Oathpact
  • Radiants
  • Windrunning: Windrunning is using Surgebinding to affect gravity. It is described in three methods known colloquially among members of the Windrunners as the "Three Lashings." These are the Basic Lashing, Full Lashing, and Reverse Lashing.
  • Mashala: Formal term for "Aunt" in the Alethi language.
  • Spren: Spirit-like beings in the land of Roshar which either cause, or are drawn to, different conditions or emotions.
  • Fabrials: Devices that use Stormlight to perform various functions, such as heating a room, blocking pain, Soulcasting, etc.
  • Thaylens: Renowned traders and merchants native to an island nation. Possessed of very long white eyebrows and white beards on the males
  • Alethi: Native to the nation of Alethkar, the Alethi are members of one of the four Vorin nations. They have a famed military heritage and are possessed of tan skin and dark hair.
  • Veden: Native to the Vorin nation of Jah Keved, the Vedens are characterized by pale skin and reddish hair.
  • Shin: A race native to the region of Shinovar, Shin have large eyes, bald heads, and stand shorter than most others, averaging roughly five feet tall.
  • Parshendi: A proud, tribal race native to the Shattered Plains which possess a warrior culture. The Parshendi are viewed by many other races as savages. They have mottled red and black skin that forms patterns unique to each individual, and are at war with the Alethi during the novel's main timeline.
  • Horneaters: A relatively rare race, Horneater is actually a term used by other races to describe them. They possess reddish hair, dark skin, and stand well over seven feet tall.
  • Natanatani: Native to the Vorin nation of Natanatan, the Natanatani often wear gloves and have faintly bluish skin
  • Soulcasting: a practice where objects are changed from one form to another. It has been shown to turn rock into smoke, purify the blood from poisons, and create food, and has many other uses. The only known practitioners of soulcasting are Jasnah Kholin, and the Ardents of the Vorin religion.
  • Shardplate: full plate armor which both protects and strengthens their wearer. The armor provides protection against Surgebinding, as one wearing the armor cannot be "lashed" directly.Repeated strikes at the same spot on the armor by regular weapons or Shardblades can cause the armor to crack and break. The armor can be repaired or "regrown" though it is costly to do.
