“Great book about a United States
Marine Corp sniper.”
“I thought this was a great book. The thing that I like about this book is that it's non-fiction. Non-ficton war books are the best kind because everyting that is told actually happened and is true.”

By: Sgt. Jack Coughlin and Donald A. Davis
I have recently finished the autobiography, Shooter, based on the military career of Sgt. Jack Coughlin. Normally I don't like to read, especially autobiographies, but I found this book to be very interesting because of its action and how real it seemed. I think Jack Coughlin, the Marine scout sniper, and Donald A. Davis, the author of Shooter, worked really well together to make an interesting, real, and action packed autobiography.
I liked the attitude of Jack in the book. I thought it was interesting how the environment and his thoughts were constantly stated. The author always created a good mental picture of Jack's opinions and thoughts. The book really demonstrates what it is like to be a sniper in the marine corp. The book also tells a little about his childhood, which is ironic and his life outside of the marines.
Obviously the main character in the book is Jack Coughlin. Jack is a Marine sniper. He is an athletic and well-built person. One of his first memories is being hit in his right eye with a rock. The doctor doubted that Jack would be able to see again. However, over time his eye corrected itself to eventually be 10/20 vision. That is ironic because that is the eye that he uses to aim. He said, "It was only a quirk of fate that I could only qualify to be a sniper."(Page 13) When he was young he enjoyed baseball and had the dreams of going pro one day. Unfortunately, that dream was ruined for him when he hurt his arm during the fall. That influenced him to sign up for the marines and he eventually developed one of the best sniping careers ever. He is divorced and has two daughters growing up in California.
Jack describes his personality throughout the book as a tough guy, who needs to prove his point, like when he got in a fight with a man that weighed 50 more pounds then him by saying "I stand five-nine weigh 165, but I never back down from a bully."(Page 9). He speaks his opinion very frequently though words and actions. He also likes to have a little fun, but is dead serious when he is behind the scope of his gun. Jack even said in the book, "This was the first time that Casey and most of my other Marines had seen me with my real war face on and they were startled by the sharp change in my attitude, which was totally focused and almost unreasoningly critical." (Page 88)
There are many settings in the book. At the beginning of the book he is in Somalia fighting a war. A main scene is at the 29 palms. The 29 palms is a Marine military base located in California. It is interesting to hear the author describe the hot and dry dessert like Marine camp.
The first paragraph of the book takes the reader right into the action so the reader is immediately interested. The action in the book never slows down either. The book is always giving you his insight and opinion on everything so you know what he is thinking. It is about a 290 page read, and it tells from Jacks experience, what war is like. The book goes into a lot of detail about the wars and what it is like to be a marine. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in shooting or our war in Iraq. It is a great book and worth the time to read.

“I liked reading Seal, but I loved reading Shooter. This guy can write. The story is captivating. Coughlin calmly tells of his adventures, especially the huge change at the end of the book.
If you are into military books, give this one a try!”
“Great book with a lot of violence and military information.”

I finally decided to read it when I remembered that I was really into war books. I was really glad I picked it up. The story of the man who was responsible for the Urban sniping tactics that are in use today. He served in several different theaters including the Bosnian Conflict and Iraq. He has struggles that only a sniper could face, and moments of humor. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good war book and doesn't mind a lot of swearing. ”
