It's really hard to put this book down. It was pretty shocking to read from Mary's point of view, definitely a way to snag a reader. I like to think I'm hard to shock, but I'd have to say McCammon did it for me in this book. Mostly because it's my nightmare, as is it for probably any other...

It was a good story and excellent writing but I do have one gripe with it.

The whole cat and mouse chase scenes between Laura and Mary went on for too long. After the 4 or 5th time Laura caught up with Mary and Mary, yet again, got away I was getting tired of it all. After the two of them got mauled by pit bulls Mary shouldn't have been able to stand let along get away and keep going with her injuries for the next 4-5 days and still survive another encounter with Laura. While I liked the story I think that the last quarter of the book was getting to me with the constant catching up and another getaway. I think that bit should have been cut down or have made let actual encounters happen.

It's really hard to put this book down. It was pretty shocking to read from Mary's point of view, definitely a way to snag a reader. I like to think I'm hard to shock, but I'd have to say McCammon did it for me in this book. Mostly because it's my nightmare, as is it for probably any other mother. I wasn't a huge fan of his after reading Swan Song, but this book is nothing like that. It is a bit long, and the journey starts to lose some tension because of the sheer length and close calls, but I can't imagine many people can quit before they get to the conclusion. I didn't want it to end, I was desperate to know what happened post-abduction, but I guess I never will. Great, suspenseful read.

Mary Terrell misses the Sixties. Back then, the Doors were still in their prime, drugs were plentiful, and Mary and the other members of the radical “Storm Front” militant group took a stand against the evils of capitalism and Big Brother. Now thirty years after a violent confrontation with the FBI forced the group to scatter into hiding, Mary is a washed-up, mentally unstable forty-something who flips burgers at a minimum wage job. She finally decides to fulfill her dream of reuniting with Lord Jack, her long lost lover and the Front’s former Charles Manson-wannabe leader. Well past her child-bearing years and determined to reclaim her stolen youth, Mary kidnaps a newborn baby from a local hospital and strikes out for California to present Lord Jack with “their” son. But Laura Claybourne, the mother of the infant in question, is certainly not going to give up her first born child without a fight. A high-octane thrill ride as well as a nostalgic glance back at the 1960s, Mine is a unique novel that grabs the reader by the throat and refuses to let go until the last page of its riveting conclusion. Winner of the 1990 Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel.

This is a horrifying book. First, imagine your child stolen from a hospital. Then imagine your child stolen by a homicidal madman. This is the situation that "Laura", the mother of "David" finds herself in. The book starts off with a bang. Enough so that I was unsure if I was going to be able to continue reading it. Violence against children upsets me so the first time I saw Mary with her "baby" my stomach knotted.

The action was fast and relentless leading to me reading late into the night. The super human nature of the characters and the at times laxity in medical accuracy could have brought down my rating of this book but the shear intensity kept my attention and the interest high.

Very fast-paced. This book is about a crazy woman on the loose who kidnaps a baby from a wealthy family and the wild ride she takes them on.

    What a great horror/suspense novel this is - a real page-turner.

    Back Cover Blurb:
Laura Clayborne is a successful journalist with a successful stockbroker husband. But her marriage is foundering and her biological clock is winding down. David, her newborn son, is the only light in her life.
Mary Terrell, alias Mary Terror, is a scarred survivor of the Sixties. A former member of the terrorist Storm Front Brigade, she now festers in a world of warped memories and unrelenting rage. Quite simply, Mary Terror is mad. Murderously mad.
When Mary Terror steals Laura's baby and heads west, killing anyone in her way, Laura realizes the only way to stop her is to hunt her down. But the closer she get to Mary, the more she must think and act like her.....

The best horror story I have ever read. I read this many years ago, and it still haunts me.
