An excellent book, for those with literary tastes. Echoes of Henry James, set in the Australian city and wilderness of the 19th century. Even worth re-reading.

This book was not what I expected, or I should say it was not what I hoped for. It took me a couple of starts to read Riders In The Chariot but I ended up liking it. Voss took a couple of starts but I can't say I liked it too much.

This book was very slow. For a book that...

Exploration of 1800's Australia; Voss goes into the heart of the outback and finds terror. Laura keeps his myth alive and waits for him. Beautiful language and adventure.

A brilliant book. I loved this book. It still resonates in my mind. The character describes all of us who are unprepared fro our lives and the hell we walk into.

Outstanding book. White deals with themes of sacrifice, betrayal, redemption, and other big religious questions in a clever, readable way. Despite his Nobel prize, White continues to be an underrated Australian author.

I've read the greats - Kafka, Nabokov, Steinbeck, Mann, Dostoyevsky and Orwell and this book puts White amongst them. His command of language is the equal to any of the greats. The story is a simple one, told elegantly and powerfully.

It is a majestic novel without the faux pretenses of literary pretenders. He had me by the second sentence. Read it.

This book was not what I expected, or I should say it was not what I hoped for. It took me a couple of starts to read Riders In The Chariot but I ended up liking it. Voss took a couple of starts but I can't say I liked it too much.

This book was very slow. For a book that is about a journey, and is only about 430 pages long I found it odd that they had barely left by page 200! I was hoping for an interesting book about exploration - sounds fun, doesn't it? But this book is about a number of characters, primarily Laura and Voss, who really don't know who they are and what they are doing. It became one painful little disaster after another and was a disappointment from beginning to end.

    Patrick White wrote about Voss:

"As it is I'm a dated novelist, whom hardly anybody reads, or if they do, most of them don't understand what I am on about. Certainly I wish I had never written Voss, which is going to be everybody's albatross." *

I think his comment on Voss was right on.

I read this because one of my favorite actresses (Cate Blanchett) said this was one of her best picks on her bookshelf. It was difficult to read, the characters all irritated me, and the ending annoyed me. After I was finished I thought I'd climbed a mountian just by finishing it. I'm no slouch when it comes to difficult dialogue/descriptions but this book made me crazy!! Guess I'm just not as smart as Cate!!

Patrick White is the only Australia author to have won the Nobel Prize fro Literature. I read this book many times while at University and I was completely floored by it. I have not re-read it out of fear that I have changed and it may not be as incredible as it was then.
