Characters edit see section history

  • Griffin Silverwing: The newborn son of Shade Silverwing and Marina Brightwing. As the offspring of two different species, his appearance is noticably different from the rest of the Silverwings. His attitude towards the world is also different from the rest of the newborns. He is extremely cautious, almost paranoid, about the world. He is somewhat of an outcast amongst the newborns, much like Shade was, however Luna seems to enjoy spending time with him.
  • Luna: A newborn Silverwing who is friendly and adventuresome. She is very popular with the other newborns.
  • Shade Silverwing: Griffin's father. The protagonist of Silverwing and Sunwing, Shade has come a long way from being a runt newborn. He has now saved the sun and brought peace between bats and owls. He has extraordinary sound abilities allowing him to move objects, sing pictures into the heads of other echo-locating animals, and even create sound-illusions to either cloak himself or appear as a different creature altogether (referred to as soundshifting).
  • Marina Brightwing: Griffin's mother and Shade's mate. After having endured the countless perils that her journey with Shade exposed her to, her choice in a mate was obvious.
  • Goth: The king of the Vampyrum Spectrum bats.
  • Frieda Silverwing: The late elder of the Silverwing colony. She was one of the many banded by humans. She possessed the ability to read the echo-songs stored in Tree Haven's echo chamber, the method used by the Silverwings use to pass on their colony's history, which she also taught to Shade.
  • Murk: A Vampyrum bat from the Underworld who has deserted his brethren to seek out the Tree.
  • Rowan: Add a description of this character.
  • Nemo: A whiskery-faced bat from the Underworld. He has long claws intended for fishing.
  • Lucretia: The current chief elder of the Silverwing colony.
  • Nocturna: The creator goddess of bats. Ruler of the living. Twin sister of Cama Zotz.
  • Cama Zotz: The lesser-known god of bats. Ruler of the dead. Twin brother of Nocturna. Worshipped by the Vampyrum Spectrum.
  • Ariel: Shade's mother.
  • Corona: A stubborn Silverwing bat from the Underworld.
  • Yorick: A Silverwing bat from the Underworld. He has been searching for the Tree for 500 years.

Setting & Locations edit see section history

  • Tree Haven: The Silverwing colony's nursery roost. Newly carved from an old sugar maple, as their previous roost had been burned down by owls.
  • Upper World: The land of the living, ruled by Nocturna.
  • Underworld: The land of the dead, ruled by Cama Zotz. Riddled with illusions of forests, bugs, and water to trick gullible bats into thinking they are still alive; if they come to the realization that they are dead, they are more likely to want to leave via the Tree, lessening the number of souls in Zotz's kingdom.
  • Stone Hold: The cave in which the Silverwing males roost while the newborns are being nursed at Tree Haven.
  • The Tree: A massive tree in the Underworld, placed there by Nocturna to allow bats to move onto the next life.

First Sentence edit see section history

It had rained during the day, and now, under a three-quarter moon, the forest was silver with mist.
