Characters/People edit see section history

  • Shade: A young Silverwing bat. Originally the tiny, awkward runt of his litter, Shade has grown over his long journey. He is now larger and has grown into his bat skills. He has learned the ability to sing pictures into the heads of other bats and owls, as well as the ability to move objects with sound.
  • Marina: A Brightwing bat. She was outcast from her clan because of the band she was given by humans, which has since been torn off. She is now an accepted member of the Silverwing colony due to her integral part in Shade staying alive and finding Hibernaculum.
  • Goth: A Vampyrum Spectrum bat from the jungle with a six foot wingspan and a taste for meat.
  • General Cortez: The current ruler of the southern rat kingdom.
  • Frieda: The eldest Silverwing bat. She is one of the many banded by humans. She has the ability to read the echo-songs stored in Tree Haven's echo chamber, the method used by the Silverwings use to pass on their colony's history, which she teaches to Shade.
  • Zephyr: The blind albino bat who inhabits the cathedral spire, guiding bats along their migration path. He possesses the power to hear the past, present, and future. Knows how to use certain berries to heal minor injuries. His hearing is allegedly so sensitive that he can hear the stars.
  • Ishmael: One of the bats of Statue Haven.
  • Ariel: Shade's mother.
  • Orestes: A young owl; the son of General Brutus, king of the owls.
  • Caliban: A Mastiff bat. Leader of the make-shift colony that inhabits Statue Haven.

  • Nocturna: The creator goddess of the Silverwings.
