What happens to a young man, who has The Right Stuff, but never fulfills his dream of becoming an astronaut ?
Ted Pittman Jr. gives us the exciting answer in his first novel. A techno-thriller that pits the hero against the establishment as he fights to express his God given talents.
Having grown up in Harlem and Brooklyn, as the eldest of three children, Ted learned to survive the city streets. But his passion was ‘tinkering around’, as he likes to call it.
He developed his technical creative skills while baby-sitting or not at his part-time jobs. Encouragement from his mother helped him successfully compete at school Science Fairs and qualify for scholarships.
Like many young people, Ted started a family too early and it grew rapidly. The Monkeybars of Life chronicles many of the challenges he faced and the resulting consequences – some good, some bad. Ted hopes “the book may serve as a guide for people who are creative and have uncompromising minds.”
Now retired, “Grandpa Ted”, spends his time with his grandchildren, writing, bowling, and travelling the world with his wife, Betty.

Reviewed by Robert Fleming for The African American Literature Book Club
“The Monkeybars of Life, salutes the dual notions of endurance and survival. Pittman's main character, Nate LaChae, who is blessed with an immensely gifted mind for things mechanical, plows ahead through all kinds of obstacles and challenges to realize his dream. Pittman knows a good analogy when he sees one: in this modern, high-tech world, it takes more than luck, fate or talent to succeed. It takes a dogged determination.”
“Through all of the novel’s event-packed narrative, Nate survives the betrayals, the lawsuits, the counter suits, fraud, and larceny to realize his potential but falling short of his dream. He returns home to be the father that his children need and to fulfill his destiny. Believable, engaging, and inspirational, Pittman’s novel about an uncommon man and his gift makes for an interesting read. You will be hearing more from Mr. Pittman. "

First Sentence edit see section history

The flight from New York to Chicago was Nate LaChae’s second flight. Eleven years before, when he sixteen, he won a Navy award at the school science fair and was flown up to Boston. That flight was on a noisy prop-plane. Now he was gliding along at 530 mph over Pennsylvania. He wished he had the seat by the window, but even from the middle seat, he could see the clouds reflecting the setting sun. He removed his mother's letter from his briefcase and read it again.
