- Georgia Mason: The main character of the book, whose perspective it is written in. A "Newsie" - a news blogger who presents the truth as objectively as possible.
- Shaun Mason: Georgia's brother. An "Irwin" - a blogger whose idea of a good time is to poke undead things with a stick.
- Georgette "Buffy" Meissonier: A member of Georgia and Shaun's journalism team. Goes by "Buffy" because she is a fan of pre-Rising TV shows. A "Fictional" - who writes prose and poetry inspired by their shared experiences, and the team's techie.
- Peter Ryman: A senator running for the presidential campaign. Georgia, Shaun and Buffy are part of his press team.
- Rick: A new member of the After the End of Times team. He a Newsie with a background in print journalism.
- Steve: He's one of Senator Ryman's bodyguards. He is level headed and good under pressure. Steve understands the importance of protocol and when to be flexible.
- Mahir: George's second in command within the Newsies. He is based in England.
- Emily Ryman: The Senator's wife. She loves her family and horses as well. She has the same eye condition as George.
