In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past... and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabel, who already lost her brother to the wolves... and is nonetheless drawn to Cole. At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love - the light and the dark, the warm and the cold - in a way you will never forget.

Characters edit see section history

  • Grace Brisbane: One of two main characters of the book. Her love is Sam Roth. In the first book of the series, Shiver, she looked for a way to stop him from undergoing his last change into a wolf. She was bitten by the wolf pack when she was 11 and Sam was 12 however due to being locked in a car during a hot day her transformation into a wolf was halted and she remained human. However Grace does have the senses of sound and smell like that of a wolf and slight healing capabilities, though nowhere to the extent of Sam.
  • Samuel Kerr Roth: Grace's love. He was a werewolf and was almost taken by winter and stuck in that form forever never turning back to human.
  • Isabel Rosemary Culpeper: She is kind of bratty and is very smart when it comes to health. She skips school a lot but is still very smart. She is Jack's sister
  • Geoffrey Beck: Beck has raised Sam since his childhood after choosing to turn him into a werewolf. Beck takes care of things for the pack and goes out of his way to make sure things stay the same.
  • Paul: The current alpha male of the wolf pack, get talked about, but isn't actually seen in Linger.
  • Olivia Marx: One of Grace's best friends, she is a photographer, in the first book she was bitten by Jack and became a werewolf as well, however she welcomed the change and readily went with the other wolves. She does not physically feature in Linger.
  • Shelby: A werewolf who has always had a sick and twisted version of life. She is ecstatic for the time when she fully becomes a wolf, and has an obsessive crush on Sam. She has a natural dislike for Grace, and also is the loner of Beck's family.
  • Jack Culpeper: He is Isabel's brother. He unfortunately dies due to trying to cure a wolf bite. Mentioned in Linger but not in it.
  • Rachel Vega: Graces other best friend. Very outgoing, hyper and clueless about werewolves. Covers up for Grace when she gets in trouble.
  • Tom Culpeper: Jack and Isabel's father. Hates wolves after a wolf supposedly killed Jack.
  • Victor Baranova: Cole's friend and band member. A new werewolf.
  • Karyn: Sam's boss at the bookstore where he works. Sam likes her because she is a simple lady with an iron core.
  • Ulrik: One of the older wolves in the pack. Beck and Sam's best friend. He is German and taught Sam some. It is thanks to Ulrik that Sam loves Rilke.
  • Angie Baranova: Cole's ex-girlfriend and Victor's sister. Has a grudge on Cole forever.
  • Lewis Brisbane: Grace's father. He is an very inattentive father who hates Sam, and probably will for the rest of his life. The first time he tries to be a father drives Grace away to be with Sam.

  • “When I say panini here, everyone says bless you.”
    Isabel
  • “Their eyes, human eyes in wolf skulls, remind me of water: the clear blue of water reflecting the spring sky, the brown of a brook churning with rainfall, the green of the lake in summer as the algae begins to bloom, the gray of a snow-chocked river. It used to be only Sam's yellow eyes that watched me from between the rain-soaked birches, but now I feel the weight of the entire pack's gaze. The weight of things known, things unsaid.--From the back of Linger”
    Grace

    Cole
  • “Right now, it's hard to imagine that it is raining anywhere in the world.”
    Sam
  • “I was poison to everyone I touched, but for once, it felt good to be self aware. I couldn't stop myself from exploding, but I could at least learn to contain the fallout.”

They were throw away phrases to her, things that made her smile for a second but were just...gone after that, too corny to be real. To Grace these were the things that mattered: My hands on her cheeks, my lips on her mouth, the fleeting touches that meant I love her."”
    Sam

Setting & Locations edit see section history

Mercy Falls, Minnesota, the epi-center of the Shiver Trilogy, is the third character. The weather and personality of the place is just as important to the Shiver as Sam and Grace's love. Mercy Falls is an imaginary town (well, it's as real as Sam and Grace). In my head, it is located at the edge of the Boundary Waters, near the real town of Ely, Minnesota. Just south of the Canadian border, Mercy Falls, like Ely, is cold—with an average high temperature that never breaks 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
