It had been months since Gregor first encountered the strange underland beneath New York Cith. He's sworn he woun't ever go back. But when another prophecy, this time suggesting he should kill a monsterous white rat known as the Bane, calls for his help. The Underlanders know that the only way to get his attention is through his 2 year old little sister, Boots. Now, Gregor's quest unites him with his bond, Ares, the Princess Luxa, and new companions sends them through the deadly waterway in search of the Bane. After they got through the waterway, Gregor goes through the cave where the Bane lives. He watches Snare and Goldshard fight each other for Bane and he finds out that the Bane is just a barely speaking pup. When he figured out he couldn't kill the tiny white rat, he decides to take the rat to Ripred (another rat) and he and his companions are put in trial which the results are death. When Nerissa heard that Gregor did not kill the bane, she declares that the prophecy is fulfilled by him not killing the bane and his heart still lives.
“Still, it was the Bane. He was supposed to drain its light. His blade had broken off, leaving a jagged daggerlike weapon in his hand. It would be so easy to kill the creature in front of him. But... But..."Ma-Maaa"But it sounded just like Boots!page (230)”
“"Why did you not drain its light?" asked Vikus."Because it's a baby. It's just wrong," said Gregor."It''s the most evil thing... I...I mean, if you can kill a baby, what can't you do?""So says your heart. So says your most essential part," said Nerissa.(page 282)”
