This book is about a man that moves into a house ran by a woman called Elizabeth Pennykettele. She makes sells and buys clay dragons. What David doesn't know is that the dragons come to live. During the book David and his dragon Gadzooks has to save the Liz (Elizabeth) daugters favorite squirrel Conker and his friends.

  • David Rain: David is a 20 year-old student who goes to Scrubbley College. He is lodging at the Pennykettles' because he needs a place to stay. He likes to read a lot.
  • Elizabeth Pennykettle: Known as "Liz" she is a Potter, clay dragon maker, Lucy's mother, and David's landlady.
  • Lucy Pennykettle: She is a Student, Amateur dragon maker, Liz's daughter, and David's friend. Loves helping her favorite squirrel, Conker.
  • Gadzooks: He is David's special writing dragon and is sometimes called 'Zookie'. He is shown to have a pencil and pad, and writes things down when David thinks of him.
  • Conker: The squirrel that Lucy really likes.
  • Gaiwan and Gwendolyn: Lucy's special dragons.
  • David: He is a tenant of the Pennykettle's house.
  • Bonnington: The Pennykettle family cat sometimes called Bonny.
  • Henry Bacon: The Kettles grouchy next door neighbor.

  • Conker: A squirrel with one eye.

  • Gwilanna: An evil witch who wants the power of Gawains last tear. She has lived for over 1000 years.

  • Snigger: Snigger is Conker's best friend
  • Zanna: David's friend in college.
  • Smiler: One of Lucy's favourite squirrels. He smiles.
  • Cherrylea: One of the many squirrels introduced in the story. This one is a girl.
  • Caractacus: The evil crow that is attacking the squirrels.
  • Sophie Prentice: Vet assistant that helps treat Conker.
