This enchanting story combines a variation on the legend of Dick Whittington's cat with the charming setting of a barnyard full of animals. Whittington is a tomcat looking for a new home and finds it in a barn full of animals owned by Bernie. Bernie's grandson Ben is struggling with dyslexia and fears going to a special class or being held back a year. The animals decided that Whittington will tell the story of his ancestor after Ben's reading lessons with his sister Abby.

Ben's principal, noticing Ben's struggling, recommends Reading Recovery, which Ben reluctantly takes, and with work there and through the summer is able to stay with his grade.

In Whittington's story, Dick goes to London with help of Will Price in order to seek his fortune. There he starts work with the cloth merchant Fitzwarren and buys a cat from Sir Louis Green. When Dick and his cat go on a trading voyage to Tripoli, Dick trades his cat for riches as well as a rare herb Fitzwarren wanted. Years later, injured in a fight with a rat, the cat returns. Dick persues a romance with Sir Louis' granddaughter Mary, but she marries another. On another voyage, Will Price passes away and the cat is flung overboard. Dick returns to London with her two kittens and marries the now-widowed Mary. He inherits Fitzwarren's wealth.

In the barn, the Lady, the duck who runs the barn falls in love with a new drake named Gent, and is heartbroken when he and their children fly south for the winter. She mopes about until the other animals start writing her obituary, which shakes her back to her old self.
