“An indepth look at the life of Sylvia Plath. Through a series of skillfully crafted poems, Hemphill has pieced together a collage of the life and work of the American writer. Arranged chronologically from Plath's birth to the month of her suicide, the poems are written from the points of view of people involved in her life. ”

I find her fascinating. I don't know what it is about her, not her poetry, but her.
Each poem ends with a footnote. These are important! I actually found reading the footnote before each poem was extremely helpful.
The poems are from everyone: her brother, her mother, her father, her grandmother, her grandfather, her therapist, her downstairs neighbor, etc.
This takes about 45 minutes to read.”
“In the poetic style of Slyvia Plath, this author tells of the creative, tumultuous life of this brilliant poet and writer. In chronological order from her birth to her death, her life story is told through poems as they may have been written by the important people in her life. Although the poems are works of fiction, the author did extensive research on the life of Sylvia Plath and based all poems on information which she learned from that research. At the end of the book, the author includes a lovely letter addressed to the reader which explains her interest and admiration for Plath’s poetry. She explains her intentions of the book as to “illuminate Sylvia Plath’s life and work and to introduce newcomers to this astonishing poet and woman.” Indeed, students will surely become interested in the works of Sylvia Plath after reading this book. ”

The poems themselves were amazing; however, the footnotes that clarified the poems and Sylvia's life, although informative, broke up the flow of the beautiful poems. ”

I am not a Plath fan but the book intrigued me enough to want to learn more about her life and personality. An absorbing read for Plath fans and motivated readers who are not too familiar with her.”

An interesting concept, but not my favorite. I think only someone who was either really into poetry or Plath would want to read this book.”
