Paranormal anthology- Aug 3, 2010
5 stars

This is one of the best anthologies I have ever read! With anthologies many times the stories seem hurriedly put together, incomplete, or disappointing. A...

Read Shifting Seas and Here there be Monsters. Both extremely good:) I really recommend the Iron Seas series by Meljean Brook.

**Meljean Brook's Here There Be Monsters 4 stars ~ read April 10, 2011**

Before I get into my review, I would highly recommend that if you are interested in reading this series, you check out her website to get some needed information. Here's a great page to go to:

WOW...I'm really shocked at how much I liked this story. This is my first taste of "steampunk" and while that was certainly weird....I really liked the romance! It was refreshing to read something so different but that being said this novella is certainly a catch 22. There was enough of the "weirdness" to incite me to want to read more but possibly not enough to turn me off?? Who knows...I guess I will find out after I read the next book, The Iron Duke.

This story is about Mad Machen {aka Eben} who is basically a captain of a pirate ship and Ivy Blacksmith, who is a blacksmith but not necessarily the same type of blacksmith as you would think ~ think more of a Matrix type of blacksmith. The Horde turned things upside down by infecting people with "bugs" or nanos. This has lead to a lot of people having prosthetics of a super strength type, some actually outfitted with hammers or drills instead of arms/hands. (As I mentioned before, not a lot of information is given out on how all this happened.) The Horde can also control you if you have been affected. Not only control you to do what they want and make you slaves, but control you to mate as well, aka have a frenzy. Somehow, Ivy has never been courted or has thought of herself as being worthy so she is pretty clueless as to what Eben's intentions are. (It's also never quite explained as to why he is so enamored of Ivy.) They are really sweet together and it is quite endearing how they come to learn about each other as people and dang, there are some good smexy parts too!

I think you will either like it or not but for me, it just wasn't enough. I have no clue if the next book is ongoing or entirely different people. The Iron Duke was talked about so I'm guessing it's a different person but I am hoping that we will get updates on Eben and Ivy.

**ETA: good news...you do get more info in the next book, unfortunately (or not), it is about a different couple.

    **Nalini Singh's Whisper of Sin ~ 4 stars ~ read 1/24/12 - **

I really enjoyed the story of Emmett and Ria but I wish I would've read the story in the right chronological order. (here's the link: http://www.nalinisingh.com/psybehind.php) It's not bad reading it out of order since there isn't too much you miss out on.

They were really sweet together but as with all novellas, it gets right to the point and not enough of a story. I loved all the funny family things and Ria's grandmother was hilarious!

Read "Here There Be Monsters" (Iron Seas) only. I almost skipped this Steampunk/pirate/giant kraken short story because of the cover, which, unfortunately, seems to be a trend with the few anthologies I've picked up.

"Whisper of Sin" by Nalini Singh is down right fantastic. Also the steampunk offer by Meljean Brook, "Here there be Monsters" just blew me away. Loved both of these stories.

The rating is based off of Meljean Brook's story, the primary reason I read this anthology.
    Whisper of Sin/Nalini Singh - 2 Stars
    Blood and Roses/Angela Knight - 2 Stars
    Shifting Sea/Virgina Kantra - 3 Stars
Here There Be Monsters/Meljean Brooks - 4 Stars

Fun paranormal romance (warning - sensual stories!!) anthology featuring 4 of its star writers - Nalini Singh contributing the Psy-Chngeling short story "Whisper of Sin", featuring a woman Ria, whose life is in danger in Chinatown (San Francisco) and an unlikely protector inEmmet of the Darkriver Pack (leopard shifters) find passion amidst the danger. Angela Knight's "Blood and Roses" has vampire warrior Lord Raniero held captive by an evil vampire and his daughter Amaris (the Blood Rose) - who is sent to his room to seduce him. Yet, each must learn to trust each other to keep an evil sorcerror from unleashing their enemies upon the kingdom. Virginia Kantra contributes with a haunting tale from her Children of the Sea series featuring a wounded soldier, Major John (Jack) Harris, whose inheritance brings him into contact with a lovely independant woman, Morwenna, who rescues him in more ways than one in the story "Shifting Sea". More stories to come in novel form. Meljean Brook takes a chance into the steampunk genre with "Here There Be Monsters", and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Young Ivy is desparate to escape London as it is no longer safe for her there, so she strikes a provacative and terryifying bargain with Captain Mad Machen for passage on his ship traveling overseas. The advanced technology mixed in with a story that takes place in what seems to be in the past with an alternate history was rtich in detail, and interesting characters! Loved it! New series in the making.

I liked the first two of these steamy paranormal stories but skimmed the last two. (NS) Nearly raped Ria rescued by leopard shifter Emmett . (AK) Maris forced to use her magic to capture vampire Raniero (VK) Morwenna by the sea and Major Jack retired soldier. (MB) Blacksmith Ivy and caption Mad Machen.
