As usual, Marlowe takes a case that turns out to be more complicated, more twisted, more underground than it first seems. Chandler's command of plot and character here is fine, moving the reader consistently out of their comfort zone to consider the nastiness and depravity of apparently "upright" people. A pleasure to read.”

I get that he doesn't want to expose his clients and ruin his confidence of trust he wants with them, but I think there comes a time when one can become a slave to that and inhibit (is that a word?) justice. I would've ratted out a family with that many crimes. But then again, maybe Marlowe is showing his hidden trust in the justice system.”
