Style, ideas, language, plot all are (excellent).. It takes you to another world ... to the old Alexandria !
But for some unnecessary description of sexual relationships, I would give it a 5 !

    Azazel By Youssef Zeidan
Winner of the International prize for Arabic fiction 2009, this novel caused a lot of controversy as is always the case when an author writes about a faith he doesn't belong to, it follows the life of the Egyptian monk Hypa from place to place all over Egypt and Palestine in a period of great turmoil for the church, and his own turmoil with his human shortcomings and clerical role.
I found the novel slightly tedious at times because I'm not a great lover of history and my lasting impression of the main character is that as good and honest and christian as he was, he used and failed every woman he came across.

Great story, it discusses what it looks like when the intolerant narrow-minded mob rules. When human beings claim divine authority, life becomes hell. There is a recent movie with the name "Agora", starring "Rachel Weisz", which will give you an idea on how life was during the era of the 4th century in Alexandria, Egypt. The same era the novel is talking about.

I'm amazed by this novel , i was hesitated to read it or not,it's talking about Jesus and fatih issues.

what i like most that it's amazingly written.
How he combined between true issues and the poetic language.

    I highly recommend it.

Azazil is a story about Christianity being under the spot.. so much like (Angels and Demons) by Dan Brown, but this is quite a bit different! the one who wrote the events was a Coptic priest in the 5th century.. and all the events which took place along with the names of the historical places were TRUE. The original language of the true story was Aramaic, the language of the Christ, as they believe.

and then came a Muslim man of the 21st century named Yousef Zaidan, & translated the story into Arabic...

I am not yet half the way through it, but I can tell it is a must for those who would like to learn....

I am enjoying it.. it's been ages since the last time I read something in Arabic. I still believe that ARABIC is so beautiful.
