“Olive moves into a new antique house where she can become part of the paintings. The house has a dark past which includes Morton, a part of Elsewhere but who wants to go home. This is the beginning of a series, but not one I liked enough to continue.”

Yes | No“If you are reading strictly as a fairytale, the premise of getting inside paintings in an old house is very intriguing. The tale is well-told with quirky characters (distracted mathematician parents and three whacky cats) and an eleven-year-old heroine with whom anyone who has felt out of place can identify. The author is not writing from a Christian perspective (daemons become good guys), but there is an overall theme of light overcoming darkness. I was surprised at the level of horror (albeit mixed with humor) for this age group. The climax reminded me of the darkness of some of the more mature Harry Potter books, so if you were not comfortable with those, this will probably not be your best choice. The first of a series, The Shadows does not tie up all the threads. Nevertheless I was dissatisfied by the resolution of Morton’s part in the story.
Questions:
If you could get inside any painting, what would it be?
How does Olive feel about the places she has lived before and schools she has attended?
How does “the evil man” use those feelings against her?
What truths would help her to overcome his lies?
If you were in her place, what lies might he use to trap you?
What does the Apostle John have to say about darkness and light? What is the source of that light? Look in your Bible at John 1:6-9; John 8:12; and 1 John 1:5.

It is a adventure and mystery book. The book is about a girl named olive moves into a very mysterious house on linden street. She finds out secrets about the house, the most interesting part is that Olive goes on the adventure with her speaking cats. ”
