What a controversial novel! I have read the reviews on this, and it's like a battlezone out there!

I loved this book, if nothing else, for the gutsiness of Mr. Bell. How many of you would be willing to print such ideas? I realize that this is not out of the norm for Rob Bell, but, as always, he impresses me with his honesty.

When I first read this novel, I didn't agree with most of the ideas. However, as I grow in my "Walk," I am beginning to appreciate his ideas more (I...

One of the more frustrating reads I have enjoyed in the last 2 years. So much of what Bell has to say is helpful and clarifying, and then there are these unbelievable slips of sheer, distoriting, damnable folly. The first chapter slaps one in the face with its clear departure from gospel clarity. It orients the faith around practice rather than around the historical event of what Christ actually accomplished. Theology is thus over-ruled by praxis, when it is precisely theology which empowers...

To make a long discussion short, I will outline a few contentions off the top of my head: -Mr. Bell has his view of grace, faith and works out of balance. -Mr. Bell will not recognize the fact that because God is love, He hates sin. For example: If you love children, then you hate the abuse of children. Need James remind us? Sin when it is finished brings forth eternal death. -Mr. Bell has a low view of Scripture, mocks Bible committed Christians and openly argues his point of view against Scripture. -Mr. Bell discreetly compares his message to that of Luther's Reformation doctrine dubbing it another "repainting of Christian faith." However there is one major difference between the doctrines of Bell's and Luther's. The former "repainting" was a return to God's word; Bell's is a moving away from Scripture as stated above. Luther committed his life to putting the Word of God in the hands of the common man, Bell ridicules the man who holds to Biblical truths. Luther championed God's Word, Bell denies its power in our lives. "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come... Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away." (2 Timothy 3:1 & 5) - Mr. Bell says over and over, you cannot accurately interpret God's Word, therefore you cannot know truth. In Bell's own words the more someone says they understand the truths of the Bible the less you should trust his teaching. So Mr. Bell, we cannot know truth? "And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free." (Said Jesus as recorded in John 8:32) Once again, Bell needs to get back into the Word.
